The family, the husband and the strange accent of John Barrowman

Now 55, John was born in Mount Vernon, Glasgow and is the youngest of three children. His older sister Carole works as a university professor. His mother worked in a record store and his father worked in a factory.

Despite being Scottish, he often confuses his fans as there is very little Scottish accent to hear. In fact, it doesn’t sound British at all. Many believe he is actually American, having moved there when he was just eight years old.

The family moved to Illinois in 1975 and John quickly discovered his showbiz talent while in school. Yet, as his native accent was made fun of, he learned to speak with a general American accent. Performing in high school musicals, he actually started working for an electric company before landing a role in London’s West End in 1989.

He met his husband Scott Gill when Scott came to see him in a production of Rope. The couple entered into a civil partnership in 2006 and legally married in California in 2013. They have homes in London, Cardiff and Palm Springs. Scott actually designed their home in Cardiff and is a licensed pilot.

Doctor Who Scandal

Although John has legions of fans, he has been embroiled in numerous scandals. He had allegations of misconduct on the set of Doctor Who and speaking on Lorraine last year, he defended himself by exposing himself on set, insisting it was not about of “sexual harassment”.

He apologized but said, “That was bullshit and that was silly, we had a great time on set, that wasn’t sexual harassment.” However, John was still dropped as a Dancing On Ice judge and said the fallout from the controversy was “traumatic”.

He said: “It was very traumatic and upsetting for me and my family, companies believed what was being said on Twitter instead of people talking to me.” John has since said his departure was unrelated and he has since taken on the All Star Musicals role.

John said he exposed himself during a performance of Sunset Boulevard, prompting a letter from Andrew Lloyd Webber, warning him not to “eclipse the score with his appendix”.
