The ‘Inside Edge’ team deciphers the eternal fascination of scandals and secrets

“Inside Edge” creator Karan Anshuman said the sports drama, the third season of which promises yet another glimpse into the mind games and scandals behind the game of cricket, offers viewers something that seems out of the question. scope even if everything is “fiction”.

‘Inside Edge’ is Prime Video’s first Indian original series and has built a loyal fan base since the start of its first streaming season in 2017. While the first season focused on special effects and betting, the second season revolved around doping in sport (2019).

The third season, centered on Test Cricket, explores the possibility of legalized betting and more power struggles between the big players, both on the pitch and in the boardrooms.

When asked why scandals draw audiences both on screen and in real life, Anshuman said just knowing things about other people or anything taboo stirs his desire. .

“It’s a fundamental human emotion. In a way that salacious nature lends itself very well not only to sport but to any kind of drama. ‘Inside Edge’ is basically a kind of mix of two. When we watch a sport. live, it’s the the only thing in real life where you wear your emotions on your sleeve …

“It’s playing fast forward, you mix that up with secrets… when you find out that you can get a glimpse of what their life could be like, even in a fictional world, that’s why the show is…”, a- he added.

Directed by Kanishk Varma, the new season will see series regulars Richa Chadha, Vivek Oberoi, Tanuj Virwani, Aamir Bashir, Sayani Gupta, Sapna Pabbi and Amit Sial reprise their roles.

Chadha is back as Zarina Malik, a declining actress and part-owner of the Mumbai Mavericks team, who now wants more power for herself.

Scams and scandals, according to the “Masaan” star, are an integral part of every society.

“This is why conspiracy theories work,” she said.

“In society there is always a group of people who know what they are doing and then there are the untrained masses whose opinion is shaped by the media and different influences. We live in the midst of a million. kinds of scams. Scams, scandals will always be there, just like people who want to find out the truth, find out what really happened, “said Chadha.

Actor Akshay Oberoi, known for films like “Gurgaon,” said people are curious about “the game behind the game” and that’s what keeps them hooked.

“When scandals do happen it actually tickles something inside of people that” oh maybe it’s actually part of my own fantasy or something that I suppressed is actually playing out “” , added Oberoi, which is the new addition to the series.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Akhtar’s Excel Media & Entertainment, the third season of “Inside Edge” has been delayed due to the lockdown caused by the coronavirus.
Anshuman said the team started filming for the new installment as season two was in post-production.

“We had a really good head start, but unfortunately the best-prepared plans, as we know, are just out of whack. The challenge was to try and work from home on a very post-heavy show like this. The visual effects, the editing and the sound which is all you do with specialist studios, but we had to figure that out, “said the creator, describing the experience as” oddly educational, effective and efficient. “

Chadha said that her character comes full circle in the game she played and that she “enjoyed this delicious turn” in Zarina’s life.

“For a very long time girls grew up watching women who sacrifice themselves and are submissive. Maybe it gets so internalized that you start to justify everything and you don’t really stand up for yourself. loves a character like Zarina. She is neither black nor white, she is gray, just like the world around her, the people who manipulated her, “she added.

Oberoi, who plays Rohit Shanbagh, said he was excited to join the series, especially since he had never worked on a sports drama before.

The actor, who grew up playing basketball in New Jersey, USA, also expressed his gratitude to the creators for entrusting him with the role of a cricketer on the series.

“They trusted me to play the game. I said, ‘If that’s the case, I’ll get it. I’ll do whatever it takes to level up. ”I really wanted to be in this show. I wanted to play a sportsman and be among all these great actors. It’s a unique role and the responsibility to do all of these things was really exciting. I worked really hard to play decent cricket. Now I have fallen in love with the sport, “said Oberoi.

In February, the government said that a “code of ethics” and a three-tier grievance mechanism would apply to over-the-top (OTT) platforms, such as Prime Video, Netflix and Disney + Hotstar, news publishers and digital media.

OTT censorship has worried filmmakers, writers, and actors for some time, as many believe it will curtail their creativity on the digital platform, which has seen a boom in India in recent years.

When asked if any changes have been made to the show’s next season following government guidelines for OTT, Anshuman replied, “There has been no consequence of this.”

“Of course, there were a lot of creative calls that we took, but nothing that was outright censored in that sense, because ‘Inside Edge’ is one of those series that isn’t controversial,” did he declare.

“You will be amazed at how people have managed to find ways to subvert this type of thought control. It will always happen,” Chadha added.

The third season of “Inside Edge” premieres on Prime Video on December 3.
