When Syrian artist Julia Saeed fled her home in Raqqa, she left behind many of her beloved possessions, including her painting kit. Unable to afford a new kit, Saeed resorted to something that was readily available – earth – and quickly revamped his technique.
âPainting with earth saves money. At first I used it because I had no other choiceâ¦ But now I love it, even though I have colors, âSaeed told Reuters.
Explaining that she has now developed a passion for painting with earth, she added: âI feel like something is missing if I don’t paint with earth. I have to paint something new every day â. A video of Saeed using dirt to paint went viral on social media after it was shared by the news agency.

In the one-minute clip, Saeed is seen using different types of flooring as she paints on canvas. According to the clip, she travels through parks collecting various types of soil and even holds workshops to teach children art.
Since being shared online, the clip has garnered over 78,000 views and has left many in awe of the technique. Summarizing the situation, one user tweeted, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” while sharing the viral clip.
