Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane will still participate in the 70th edition of the Miss Universe pageant on December 12 amid the backlash she received.
THE DRAMA OF MISS UNIVERSE BY LALELA MSWANE
The Miss Universe pageant will take place on December 12 in Israel. Israel is described as an apartheid state because of its treatment of Palestinians. Therefore, there are several calls for Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane to boycott the contest.
The Miss South Africa organization claimed that it was not a political organization. Thus, Lalela will always participate in the Miss Universe contest. The South African government has since withdrawn its support for Miss South Africa to enter the pageant.
FIVE SHOCKING SCANDALS FROM MISS UNIVERSE
1. THE BODY SHAMED BY DONALD TRUMP
After being crowned Miss Universe in 1996, Alicia Machado was humiliated by organizers who claimed she was “putting on a lot of weight”. Donald Trump, who was a co-owner of the Miss Universe organization at the time, called it “Miss Piggy” and a “eating machine.”
2. A SECRET PREGNANCY
Miss Universe Puerto Rico (1994) Brenda Robles competed while she was pregnant. She was later stripped of her title because the rules state that candidates cannot be married or pregnant.
âNo, applicants cannot be married or pregnant. They must never have been married, not have had a marriage annulment, or have given birth to a child, or have had a child. Holders are also required to remain single throughout their reign â, according to the website.
The beauty queen was also sentenced to one year of probation in 2005 for shoplifting.
3. AN ALCOHOLIC EXIT
Former Miss Universe Peru Anyella Grados (2019) was disqualified from world competition and stripped of her title after a video of a drunken party surfaced online.
In the video, the beauty queen was seen “drunk and throwing up” which went against the rules of the competition. The video was reportedly recorded by Miss Teen Peru Camilla Canicoba (2018), who claimed to have posted the video in error.
4. THE MIX-UP OF STEVE HARVEY WINNERS
Miss Universe host Steve Harvey made one of the biggest on-air blunder of all time in 2015. He falsely announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez won the title while Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was the real winner.
The actor returned to the stage and apologized for his mistake by saying that Miss Philippines had really won.
âThe first runner-up is Colombia⦠Miss Philippines, take your first ride as Miss Universe,â Steve said.
5. TRANSGENDER WOMEN NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER
Miss Universe Canada disqualified Jenna Talackova from the competition in 2012 because she was not born female. However, she didn’t give up so easily and was successful in pushing for rules that prohibited transgender women from participating in the competition. She returned to the national competition where she secured a place in the top 12.
The beauty queen then signed a reality TV show deal titled The brave new girls. The reality TV series documented his battle to enter the contest.
