Former Alabama QB Jay Barker charged with domestic violence | National sports

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, married to country music singer Sara Evans, was arrested on Saturday for felony domestic violence, Tennessee authorities said.

Barker, 49, was taken to a Nashville County jail early Saturday morning, according to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office website. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and placed on $10,000 bail with a 12-hour detention because it was a domestic violence case. He was released on Saturday evening after posting bail.

WABM-TV in Birmingham reported that an affidavit of arrest said Barker and the victim were married but separated and currently living apart. The Tennessean reported that the affidavit of arrest filed with the Nashville Metro General Sessions Court indicated that two people in the vehicle were leaving a party around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when Barker allegedly reversed his vehicle “at a speed high trying to hit them, but missed.”

Barker did not respond to a call from the AP and it was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment.

Barker is a sports radio talk show host in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He led Alabama to the national championship in 1992. He won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s top upperclassman in that position and finished fifth in the 1994 Heisman Trophy voting.

Barker led Alabama to a 35-2-1 record as a starting quarterback.

This story has been corrected to show that Barker is a sports radio talk show host in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, not Birmingham, Alabama.
