Forty years later, the brothers finally reunite, back on Scottish soil and in the village that is home to the family business – the Glenrothan Distillery.

“Glenrothan” was created by Scottish actor and writer David Ashton, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Murphy. It is described as a story of family, forgiveness and the alchemy of whiskey.

Brian, 75, said: “‘Glenrothan’ is my tribute to the elements that make Scotland such an extraordinary country, where the vibrancy and majesty of the land is expressed in passion and desire – balanced by l ‘deeply rooted humor of the Scotsman and his understanding of the absurd.

“I want to make a film, which combines all the elements, to show my deep love for the motherland.”

Emma Berkofsky, Head of Development at Lionsgate UK, is developing the film with Neil Zeiger, Creative Director of Nevision, who will also produce.

Zeiger explained, “’Glenrothan’ was designed with Brian in mind.

“He is without a doubt one of the most powerful actors of his generation. However, having worked with him on camera, I knew his in-depth knowledge and vision would elevate the film even further if he directed it as well.”

Berkofsky added: “We loved the idea of Brian making a film about two estranged brothers forced to reunite to save the family whiskey distillery. It’s a touching story that shows it’s never too late to make amends – we couldn’t be more excited to bring his vision to the big screen. “
