The latest book on the market, The Mumbai Monsoon, by Kanika Saini, is a contemporary fiction that deals with the journey of three women, Ruby, Simi and Ayesha, from different walks of life, and how a monsoon in Mumbai takes them on a journey to take their life in hand.
The young author has treated the character of a 20-year-old sex worker, Ruby, in the book with great sensitivity. She is a young lady with a truly young heart and carries big dreams and hopes in her eyes while seeking respect for herself. Having lived through the worst of traumas and betrayals, she comes out as a very strong woman, truly justifying her character. To have the strength to come out of the shadows of her past, to dare to dream, the character of this woman is stimulating and will leave a lasting impact on readers. The author has rightly managed to put into words the difficulties of the most despised professions of all, and at the same time clarified that most of the time, prostitution is not a profession of choice, but a consequence of impotence. In addition, the issue of unprotected sex and violence is highlighted in this book.
As a Bollywood journalist, the author provides insight into the life behind the glamor that the world doesn’t often get to see. The book will introduce you to the world of Ayesha, a prominent Bollywood actress, having all the fame and luxury that anyone could aspire to. Big sums of money, grand parties and trips that we sometimes only dream of our whole life, this woman leads a life full of glamor. Keeping the glow of her face intact, and her health and physique absolutely fit, she is a dead woman inside. And that’s more or less an understatement. His life is a testament to the saying that “Money does not buy happiness”. The character is certainly relatable but surely not the one you would fall in love with. It seems somehow ironic that having lived in the City of Dreams for most of her life and living the dream lives of many, Ayesha herself lacks dreams for herself. She comes out as a rather depressing character.
Another prominent character in the book is that of Simi, a cheerful middle-class Punjabi girl, who is married in the city of dreams, Mumbai. From a dream wedding to motherhood, she had everything she could dream of. But life reveals her to some bitter truths, where she has had to face the hardships of surviving in a city as expensive as Mumbai while taking care of her child, a job and the household. Overall, this character is a perfect description of what an average Indian woman has to go through in her life at times.
This book will take the reader through a plethora of emotions, dealing primarily with betrayal, trauma, love and hope. The accounts of glimpses into the past lives of these women from time to time really help the reader gain a better understanding of the characters and lives of these women. Although they’re poles apart in terms of the lives they’ve led, the struggles they’ve had, their lives are kind of woven into a single thread of choice and hope.
“The Mumbai Monsoon” will definitely be one of the must-read fiction books of 2022. The book will be released Jan. 14 on Amazon and Flipkart.
