Shah Rukh Khan's Fantasy is finally coming true
Monday, November 10, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : It's been Shah Rukh Khan's ardent wish to do at one big FX-driven film that his son can embrace as the desi Spiderman.

Well, now Aryan has reason to rejoice.

Work is on to start India's most spectacular F-X film to be directed by Anubhav (Dus) Sinha.

Though Anubhav refuses to comment on the progress of this epic project it's reliably learnt that the film is to be titled Ra.One. And the title was suggested by Shah Rukh Khan himself.

"In fact Shah Rukh is taking very very keen interest in the scripting of Ra.One. And the director Anubhav Sinha would like Shah Rukh to be credited as a screenwriter for the project, if and when SRK's production house Red Chillies actually sets down to make this ambitious sci-fi thriller, " informs a source.

In the meanwhile reports that Shah Rukh would be starring in another F-X-driven fantasy directed by Santosh Sivan has Sivan puzzled.

"Right now I'm still scripting the fantasy film. And the screenplay is a long way from being completed. So how can I be thinking of casting? And I'm not doing a film with Shah Rukh at all."

As things stand Ra.One will be Shah Rukh's first and only fantasy-driven film.

Though when it would take off would depend on when he completes his current projects Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Banayi Jodi to be followed by Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan."

Says a source. "In fact these two projects are Shah Rukh's immediate and complete priority right now. He was supposed to start Karan's film earlier this year. But Karan allowed Adi to take his hero's dates and cameraman (Ravi Chandran).

Now Shah Rukh will complete Karan's film. Only then will he think of the FX film with Anubhav. That in any case, requires tremendous preparation."

Bollywood News - Shahrukh Celebrates his 43rd Birthday
Tuesday, November 4, 2008
Bollywood News : Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan today celebrated his 43rd birthday along with his family and close friends at his suburban bungalow 'Mannat.'

Shahrukh Khan celebrates 43rd Birthday (click here for more photos)

The actor is presently busy with the post production of his home production 'Billo Barber', which is to be released next year, Aditya Chopra's 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' to be released next month and preparation of the second season of the Indian Premiere League (IPL).

The actor has not had a single release since last Diwali. His films 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Chak De India' were huge box office sucesses and had swept all film awards.

His foray into IPL as the owner of Kolkata Knight Riders team did not have a dream run in the T-20 league while his television show 'Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hai' also faired poorly.

The actor, however, took these failures in a positive stride and said that each failure energises him to achieve greater success.

During his absence from the silver screen his 'King' status was virtually challenged by actor Akshay Kumar whose 'Singh is Kinng' got a bigger opening than 'Om Shanti Om'.

Shah Rukh Khan's spat with Salman Khan at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash also hit the headlines recently.

Salman spoke extensively about the fight ruling out patch up. Khan has however said that if Salman was not his friend he was not his enemy either.

Bollywood Gossip - SRK to give up smoking?
Wednesday, August 6, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : Health Minister A Ramadoss may finally breathe a sigh of relief. Shah Rukh Khan has decided to give up smoking.

"I am planning to quit smoking for the sake of my children, who hate to see me smoke," Shah Rukh Khan said, in an interview to the Malayalam daily, Malayalam Manorma. "It is a blessing in disguise and I will quit smoking in the next two months," he added.

SRK's smoking had become a kind of war between him and the Health Minister.

Ramadoss had often stated that Shah Rukh's habit of smoking publically set up a bad precedent for youngsters. But the actor did not stop.

"I am sure Mr Ramadoss will be very happy to hear this news," Shah Rukh Khan told the Malayalam newspaper.

The interview was conducted at Pollachi in Tamil Nadu where SRK is shooting for Billo Barber, directed by Priyadarshan. The film's Tamil version, Kuselan and Telugu version Kathanayakudu -- both starring Rajnikanth -- released last week.

"I started smoking when I was 22. For the last 20 years, I have been a smoker," SRK said.

"The idea of quitting propped up during a 17-hour flight," SRK explained. The actor could not smoke on the flight, and did not even feel the urge. "So if I can do without smoking in flight, I am sure I can do without it on land too," he said.

But this is not the first time Shah Rukh Khan has promised to quit smoking

Saturday, June 21, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : Meet Prajyoti Samal from Bhuvaneshwar who remarks that she is quite literally from many places in India! She is the first woman to win a crore on a reality show on Indian television that too in SRK's Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain.

Born in Bhuvaneshwar, Pragjyoti has studied under many South Indian teachers, works in a software firm in Kolkata and has auditioned for Paanchvi Pass from Bhopal.

Her diverse background has helped her learn many languages which she uses in her everyday conversations and now her family and friends are quite used to it.

Pragjyoti, who is single, was one of the zillions of contestants who’d SMS to the question that flashed on the screens to gain entry to Paachvi Pass. “All contestants had to appear for a test on the phone, followed by a written test as well as camera audition rounds.”

The contestant has not yet decided what she will do with the prize. The cheque will be hers after the episode airs. “It has yet to sink in… maybe after the telecast it will. As they say: I will cross the bridge when I come to it.”

Samal is a big SRK fan now.

While talking to press she told, “Initially, I was nervous. But when I met him, he made me very comfortable. I felt he was a friend, who I'd met weeks ago. I never felt that I was meeting the Badshah of Bollywood. Now, I am a big fan of him and respect him even more”.

We hear that Shah Rukh Khan's game show may go off air as early as by the end of July. In TRP terms the game show was never good enough for King Khan. Its TRP never went beyond 4.

Bollywood Gossip - Kajol's yes to Shah Rukh Khan
Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : Bollywood Actress Kajol has finally agreed to do Karan Johar's next titled 'My Name Is Khan' and feature as Shah Rukh Khan's wife in the film about an Indian couple living in the US.
The two were last seen as couple in Karan's 2001 family saga 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'.
When the media reported the news of her being considered for the role in 'My Name Is Khan' early last month, the straightforward actress had retorted by saying that without reading the script she would not give consent to work in a movie even made by her husband, leave alone Karan Johar or anybody else.
According to a source close to the production house, soon after that she went on a holiday with her family and there was a lull on 'My Name Is Khan' front. Now it is learnt that she has given the green signal to the movie to be directed by Karan.
Though the movie is scheduled to be launched in December, a buzz has already started that Karan has a winner in his. Not only because it has a hit pair heading the cast, but also because the composer trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, has scored some "outstanding" tunes for the movie.
Those who have heard some of the tunes composed with dummy lyrics say that one of the highlights of 'My Name Is Khan' will certainly be its music, as it always is in a Karan Johar production.
The launch of 'My Name is Khan' has been deferred till December because at present Karan is busy with Dharma Productions' other movies, including Bollywood Actors Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham starrer 'Dostana'. The film is due for release later this year.
Karan is also planning to launch his erstwhile assistant Ayaan as a full-fledged director. Incidentally, Ayaan is Kajol's first cousin.

Bollywood Gossip - Shahrukh seeks removal of VAT
Wednesday, May 28, 2008
Mumbai (PTI): Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan on Tuesday demanded that Value Added Tax and service tax on the entertainment industry be abolished and industry status be conferred to it.

It has become necessary to bring in entertainment industry under the 'concurrent list' so that it can be governed under central rules and enjoy tax concessions announced by the government from time to time, Khan said in a statement here.

At present, the entire entertainment and film industry comes under state government' s jurisdiction as a result of which, it has not been able to enjoy the already conferred dejure industry status on it.

Shahrukh Khan would release a study on the entertainment industry on Tuesday evening highlighting the need for the removal of VAT and service tax.

The study - 'The Entertainment & Media Hub' is done by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

Retaining the industry in the state government list deprives the tax concessions given by the Centre, Assocham said in its study.

According to the Assocham study, the media and entertainment sector would cross a turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore by 2011-12 from Rs 44,000 crore now.

The turnover of the television industry would grow by 22 per cent to Rs 51,900 crore by 2011-12 from Rs 19,100 crore, it said.

Bollywood Gossip - It's Bachchans vs. Kapoors vs. SRK
Friday, April 25, 2008
Right from the times of the patriarch Raj Kapoor, the Kapoor khandaan has always had a stronghold on the Filmfare awards ceremony. This time it was no different.

This year the Best Actress Award, Filmfare 2008 went to Kareena Kapoor; the Best Debutant's Award to Ranbir Kapoor and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Rishi Kapoor. Quite evidently, it was a complete Kapoor sweep once again.

Similar to the Kapoor Khandaan, another khandaan's hoping to make a sweep. Not at the Filmfare, but at IIFA - the rival awards show that has Amitabh Bachchan as the brand Ambassador.

The Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer Guru is nominated here in almost every category. The other award staples include Yash Raj and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

These families represent Bollywood's traditional film families that have ruled the award ceremonies for years.

From Amitabh to Abhishek, Yash Johar to Karan Johar and Rishi to Ranbir, the stars may have changed, the filmmakers may have changed but the awards keep coming.

Critics of the system say, if you're part of the family, the trophy's yours. If not better luck next time.

According to Madhur Bhandarkar: ''I have got national Award for Chandi Bar and Page Three. But I was a little disappointed in the popular awards here. After getting a national award, Page 3 was sidelined when it came to the popular awards. I didn't know why.''

As Madhur Bhandarkar puts it, the lines are clearly drawn - between who's in which camp and who's on who's side.

So if you're a Shah Rukh Khan, you host Filmfare but don't attend IIFA. And if you're a Bachchan that's the one award you don't miss.

All your friends and those you work with walk the red carpet with you, even hand out and receive awards. And sometimes even if you've got a great film lineage, you may at best get the critics award.

''The cliquism and the incestuousness stops talent. It's again quite the Arjun-Eklavya story, thousands of years after the Mahabharata. Only Arjun can'', says Sudhir Mishra.

According to film producer, Vipul Shah, ''Why is not a film actor or film producer allowed to promote his own family? Because that happens in every business. So why should an actor or director be restricted or be criticised for doing so. Because when a businessman hands over his multicrore empire to a son over a much more learned CEO, nobody makes an issue out of that.''

But of course there are exceptions to the rule. Powerful performers like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan, who came from the outside and built their own families - giving hope to the majority of this industry that has no family backing them.

''See people tell me that you are from Shah Rukh Khan camp, you are from this camp...we all belong to one camp. That is cinema. I am groomed in Mahesh Bhatt's so-called camp. Then I joined Shah Rukh Khan. And I have worked with Shah Rukh Khan for almost 12 years. He is like my local guardian. During these last 12 years I never felt I belong to Shah Rukh Khan's camp. I am friendly with everybody'', says Vivek Sharma, director of Bhoothnath.

Bollywood Gossip - Actor Mithun Chakraborty buys ICL's Kolkata Tigers
Friday, March 28, 2008
Following the steps of Bollywood king Shah Rukh Khan, Tollywood superstar Mithun Chakraborty has bought the Kolkata Tigers team of the Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Mithun Da, as he is popularly called in West Bengal after he shifted to the Bengali film industry from Bollywood, told IANS: 'Yes, I have bought the Kolkata Tigers of the ICL. Thursday everything will be formally announced after completing some legal formalities.

'I have always been a sports lover and had organised the Raj Kapoor Trophy in Chembur, Mumbai, for several years where big stars played. But it was not just passion that made me buy the team, there is business in it also.'

The king of disco dance said: 'I am an entertainer and Twenty20 is a fantastic form of entertainment. There is craze and good business in it. So I decided to try my luck.' Asked how much he spent on the team, Mithun said: 'At present I cannot reveal the figure, but it is certainly a triple digit in crores (tens of millions).'

He said after completing the formalities he would go for an overhaul of the team and add to its sheen by giving it a logo along with a slogan and a theme song. On whether he wanted to rename the side Bengal Tigers, he said: 'I have strongly recommended it. Kolkata is the capital of Bengal, but my side will represent all the people of the state. I have fans in every corner of the state.'

Asked what made him go for a team in ICL and not Indian Premier League (IPL), Mithun said: 'I woke up late. The realisation that I could even own a team and make it into a profitable business venture dawned late on me.

'There is no question of competing with Shah Rukh Khan. He is one of the finest gentlemen I have come across and he gives a lot of respect to his co-stars. Besides, you can't compare our popularity. He is way above me.'

On whether his Bengal Tigers would imbibe his fighting spirit, the reigning hero of Tollywood said: 'Undoubtedly so. Life has never been a bed of roses for me. I have fought for everything and my team will be a fighter too.'

First Look: SRK's 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'
Monday, March 24, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : The first look of Aditya Chopra - Shahrukh Khan blockbuster combo 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' is a studio still since the movie is yet to start. As is apparent it is mint fresh and oozing with youthful buoyancy. The king spins the world on his finger while that dimpled smile raises indescribable emotions in millions of hearts. Don't be surprised if new box office records are created this year once it is released on December 12.

Shahrukh Khan

The wait is over. Eight years after he last directed a film, Aditya Chopra is back helming a Yash Raj Films production. Even as his directorial debut ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ continues its record breaking run in its 13th year, Aditya is ready to direct his third film.

After directing his second film, ‘Mohabbatein’, back in 2000, Aditya had taken a conscious break from direction to set up and develop India's first studio model making Yash Raj Films a name to reckon with. In the years that followed, YRF, under the keen eye of Aditya, produced such blockbusters as ‘Dhoom’, ‘Dhoom 2’, ‘Hum Tum’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Salaam Namaste’, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Chak De India’. While Aditya was the creative producer in all these films, he also kept up with his creative juices by writing his father Yash Chopra's directorial venture ‘Veer-Zaara’ in 2004, and the stories of other films.

Aditya’s third directorial venture would be titled ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ that would star the formidable Shah Rukh Khan... indeed the jodi of Adi and SRK would once again be a treat for film audiences the world over.

Aditya would introduce a new girl opposite King Khan in the film. The hunt for a new girl is on.

The film, to be produced by Yash Chopra, would be written and directed by Aditya Chopra.

I am begging sponsors to help us live IPL dream: SRK
Friday, March 14, 2008

Shah Rukh Khan
Mumbai : They don't call him King Khan for nothing. With each passing day it appears Shah Rukh Khan is outsmarting all other team owners in the India Premier League.

This is what he had to say about the money, the excitement and the business of IPL.

On IPL bidding
"I think we got 80 to 90 per cent of what we wanted. I am very happy with it. I personally didn’t enjoy the auction, I am very odd with these kind of things. It was fun to go there but was a little embarrassing to sit and raise hands and all, so I didn't do it.

Bollywood News - Now SRK wants to take terrorism head-on
Saturday, March 1, 2008
Filmmaker Karan Johar is breaking away from larger-than-life family soaps and fairytale romances. For a change, he will make a reality movie about terrorism called Khan without songs. The movie will star Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Terrorism is too grim a subject to be associated with a Karan Johar movie. But, this time around, the filmmaker has opted for the real world.

Though Johar refused to divulge the details of the script, the buzz doing the rounds in Bollywood says that the movie will be essentially about Islamic terrorism post-9/11.

'Terrorism is a reality of our time. We cannot afford to shut our eyes to it. I am taking this film as a challenge,' Johar told the media.

Shah Rukh will play the role of a peace activist who, after being kidnapped by the terrorists, has a chance to see their 'causes' from their point of view.

Industry sources said the movie is a dream-come-true for Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh. For this is one role he always wanted to play and he would often tell journalists that he had played all other kinds of roles in movies, but would like to play a terrorist if somebody offered him such a role, a source said.

Bollywoood Actor Shah Rukh had once said he had personally experienced that if one had a Muslim surname abroad, one was looked upon as a terrorist. 'In London's Heathrow airport people recognise me, but when they see my second name, they run an extra check,' he had said in a recent interview.

The movie had earlier been titled My Name Is Khan.

Bollywood News - Ajay's advice to Kajol regarding SRK!
Sunday, February 24, 2008
Well do not get excited and jump to conclusions after reading our headline, as we are not about to indulge in yellow journalism! This is a rather interesting incident that took place between Bollywood Actors Ajay Devgan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. It is quite in contrast to the recent stories involving Kajol's hubby Devgan and her advice seeking SMS to Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan, concerning Raju Hirani's film. And we go!

As per Mumbai based media sources, Kajol was wondering as to why her close friend Shah Rukh Khan had not replied to her SMS about doing Rajkumar Hirani's film. Seeing Kajol being worried about the same, loving hubby Ajay Devgan told her (rather coolly) to call SRK and find out, instead of getting worried the whole day and staring at her mobile, while waiting for a reply from King Khan. Needless to add that Kajol took her husband's intelligent advice rather seriously and did the same. And we know her decision regarding the matter.

For those who are still clueless, as of the moment, Aamir Khan is the only actor finalised for Rajkumar Hirani's next project based on the Indian education system.

Bollywood Gossips - Three held for using SRK's credit card
Sunday, February 17, 2008
The alertness of a sales executive at a suburban mall led to the arrest of three persons who allegedly tried to use Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan's credit card to purchase clothes, police said.

Three individuals -- Vinay Tambe, James Perenal and Shekar Jadhav, were arrested by the police in the north east suburb of Mulund on February 11 when they attempted to make purchases using Shah Rukh's credit card at a mall there.

"The three persons, who are all unemployed, have claimed that they found the credit card lying on a road in suburban Santacruz a few days earlier and took it to the mall to buy some clothes," a senior police official at the Mulund police station told PTI.

It has been verified that the credit card belonged to the actor, the official said, adding they were presently investigating how the trio had found it.

The trio purchased clothes worth approximately Rs 25,000 and one of them produced the Bollywood star's credit card at the time of paying for the garments, he said.

The sales executive who saw the transaction slip in the actor's name realised something was wrong.

I don't like being told what to do - Shah Rukh Khan
Friday, February 1, 2008
Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has taken another dig at Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss for the latter's quit-smoking-on-screen appeal to him, saying he does not like anyone telling him what to do and what not to.
Shah Rukh Khan on smoking

Shahrukh Khan

"I do not endorse smoking and I do not like anyone telling me personally what to do and what not to do," Khan said in an interview to a news channel.

"You cannot tell me how to earn a packet, you cannot tell me what to eat and what to wear, what not to say to my wife, these are personal things. So, I guard that very jealously," he said.

Ramadoss had, earlier this week, said Khan should not have smoked in the stands while watching a cricket match in Mumbai and that he and Amitabh Bachchan can learn a thing or two from superstar Rajnikanth regarding smoking on screen.

But Khan had this piece of advice for everyone. "I tell children all the time, please do not smoke because it is the worst. If I do not smoke, I would be a big movie star for many, many years to come or maybe I won't be because I smoke that is such a bad thing to do. Do not do it," he pleaded.

Khan (42) has earned the ire of anti-smoking groups on different occasions for lighting up in public in violation of a 2004 ban.

In October, the National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication slapped a legal notice on him asking him to explain his actions after he was spotted smoking at a cricket match and at a media conference.

On rumours of his entry into politics, Khan said despite having a good relationship with the young scions of the Gandhi family, there is no question of joining politics.

"Half of the people think that I am very close to the Congress and am going to join politics. I am very close to Priyanka, Robert and Rahul. I tell everyone, I say this whenever I meet them. Why don't you ask them, are you going to join films," the actor said in the interview to be telecast on Saturday.

"I have another friend who is a software engineer. That does not mean I can design softwares like Azim Premji. So, these are my friends but what they do as a job is incidental to my relationship with them."

Khan, who set a new trend of sporting six-pack abs which he adorned in his last film "Om Shanti Om" said his son prompted him to go for the new look.

Shahrukh Khan [ Exclusive Photo Gallery ]

"My son told me Papa, you're fat... Though I wasn't, I didn't think I was fat. And I told him that, listen dude, I am not fat, I am okay.

"But he said no, you are fat papa... So I said okay give me some time and as this film required it..."

On his plans this year ahead, Khan said, "This year I would like to dedicate myself to make movies for kids, not childish movies but movie for kids, take technology of Indian cinema further. So I set parameters for myself and I try to work towards that."

Monday, January 28, 2008
Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has appealed to Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan to stop smoking in movies as millions of youngsters emulate them and imbibe the bad habit.

"I have already made appeals to Shah Rukh Khan," Ramadoss said in Karan Thapar's "Devil's Advocate" programme being aired on a news channel.

"But I would be happy to do it again and say, 'Please don't smoke in your movies, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan'. I would like to make an appeal to Mr. Shah Rukh Khan and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and all the other personalities.

"Fourteen-year-olds are taking to tobacco. India should be very, very concerned about the alarming rise of incidence of tobacco (use) amongst young people," the minister emphasised.

Criticising movies with smoking scenes, the minister said: "The movies are most responsible (for encouraging smoking). When I said movies should not have smoking scenes, we have statistics which show that 52 percent of children have their first puff of a cigarette because of movie celebrities."

When asked about Shah Rukh smoking during a recent cricket match, Ramadoss said the actor should not have done it.

"Absolutely not. What was the necessity? See these are celebrities and millions of youngsters look up to these celebrities...I again say to celebrities, in whichever field they are, whether it's movies or sports, not to do these things in public."

Responding to a question if Shah Rukh and Amitabh could stop smoking like Tamil superstar Rajnikant, the minister said: "Easily, they could do it. Without a doubt."

Bollywood Gossips-Kareena loves seducing SRK
Friday, January 18, 2008
Kareena Kapoor's ultimate dream is to do a romantic movie with Shah Rukh Khan. The actress can't seem to stop gushing over her favourite actor.

"Very frankly I did the Yeh mera dil song in Don because of Shah Rukh. My ultimate wish is to do a full-on love story with him," said the actress whose latest movie Jab We Met is a box-office hit.

"When Farhan Akhtar offered me the song I wondered if making a guest appearance was right for me. However, the temptation of doing a song with Shah Rukh got the better of me."

Kareena says she is glad she did the song. "It got me tremendous notice. My niece Samaira has become my biggest fan. She dances to the song. And the minute she sees me she starts singing Yeh mera dil pyar ka deewana," said the young Kapoor.

The actress, who is listening to new scripts every day, has given the go-ahead to only two new projects.

"I've decided I can't do run of the mill films any more. I've done enough films without conviction. And it shows in my performances. Unlike my sister Karisma who could look convincing in any role, I've to be convinced about the role."

Talk about her movie Omkara and Kareena's face brightens up.

"It's one film I'm truly proud of. I'm looking forward to working with Vishal Bharadwaj again. He's one of those rare directors who know how to tap into my potential. I need directors like Vishal and Imtiaz Ali of Jab We Met to come forward and give me a chance. That's why I've taken a long break to get my act together. I don't want to look back on my career with any regrets," she said.

Khan is a four-letter word that spells box-office magic
Monday, January 7, 2008
Khan is a four-letter word that spells box-office magic.

When Mangal Pandey was released in 2005, Aamir Khan was asked how long his luck would work at the box office. "At least for another 20 years," he had replied.

It looks like the actor's prophecy was spot on. And that seems to hold true for the other two Khans as well.

The year 2007 was dominated by Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir, who delivered the biggest hits of the year. The only other actor who came close to them was Akshay Kumar with hits like Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiya and Welcome.

One actor who could have taken on the Khan might -- Hrithik Roshan -- did not have any release.

Aamir Khan in a still from Taare Zameen ParSo it was the Khans' playground with Shah Rukh leading the pack. The stupendous success of Om Shanti Om and Chak De! India only helped solidify his King Khan status. Salman's Partner and Aamir's directorial debut Taare Zameen Par were the other big hits from the Khan fraternity.

So exactly how does the Khan magic work?

According to Spice Marketing Communication Agency trade analyst Prabhat Chaudhary, "All these Khans are pre-liberalisation period heroes and have established a certain fan following. Their audiences and fan base have grown up with them so to watch their films is like an event for Indian families.

"There is a generation of loyalty in Indian families for the Khans and that has remained the same," he adds. "This generation just refuses to let them go. That loyalty base has not shifted to any other hero in the last so many years and that is the reason for the Khans' rule."

And so year after year, for the last 20 years, one of the Khans has always managed to deliver some of the biggest hits at the box office. If Aamir started the hit trend with the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Salman continued the run with Maine Pyaar Kiya, followed by Shah Rukh's Baazigar and Darr.

Salman Khan in a still from PartnerSalman then followed up with the smash hit Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. Not to be outdone, Shah Rukh delivered the all time hit, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

And the Khan gold rush did not stop there. Up next was Aamir's Raja Hindustani followed by Sarfarosh and then the Oscar-nominated Lagaan.

Dogged by controversies galore, Salman's popularity never dipped. His film Tere Naam created a record of sorts at the box office by getting the biggest opening in 2003.

So does having a Khan surname guarantee success in Bollywood? "It is not like that," says trade analyst Vinod Mirani. "They have done good work and all three -- Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh -- have gained from it.

"There were other Khans too in between -- Zayed, Fardeen and even Arbaaz -- but none of them clicked in a big way," he continues. "The only other Khan that clicked off late was Saif Ali Khan after Hum Tum became a big hit."

About Saif's success, Mirani says, "It is a question of sustainability in the industry. One has to sustain for long and there is a great chance that one or the other film will click for sure."

Mirani points out that Amitabh "Bachchan too had 12 flops in a row before he delivered a hit in Zanjeer. He didn't give up and tried till he succeeded. Once you succeed then a couple of flops are pardonable in the industry because you have already created a loyal fan base."

So is it just sheer doggedness that guarantees success?

According to another trade analyst, Taran Adarsh, "One has to admit the fact that all three -- Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman -- have worked hard to become successful. They have always chosen the best scripts for their films and so also (have had)luck, which everyone needs in life."

Shah Rukh Khan in a still from Om Shanti OmSo will the same hold true for the others?

On condition of anonymity, a trade analyst points out, "Sparks were shown by Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapur and even Neil Mukesh. They are good but they still have a long way to go. Till then, the Khans will rule.

"Indian families," he continues, "keep some money aside from their monthly budget to watch a Khan film and that is going on for the last 15 years. That is a worrisome trend because the film industry has not produced any new big stars."

Till it does, we have the Khans.

Ask what works for him at the box office, Salman Khan told rediff.com an interview, "It is my ability to pick up the right scripts. I am a writer's son (Salim Khan of Salim-Javed fame) and I know which film will work and that is the reason my films work.

"I can pinpoint the script that will catch the fancy of the audience and will never let it go," he added. "I put a great deal of attention on it, and therefore my films work.

"I feel everything is destiny," he continued. "If something good is written in your fate it will happen and that is what has happened to me. If I was not an actor, I would have been a painter probably."

Gauri Khan, Vogue's cover girl
Thursday, December 20, 2007
Shah Rukh Khan has every reason to preen. No, it doesn't have anything to do with his six packs. Rather, it's his wife Gauri Khan who is the center of attention.

The mother of two has been chosen as the cover girl of Vogue India for its January edition.

The pictures were shot against the eight-floor extension of the Khans' sprawling home, Mannat.

'This is not my profession,' Gauri said. 'It has to be something really new and unusual to make me want to do something like this. I did enjoy the shoot but to be honest, I wouldn't do it very often."

"This collaboration between Gauri and Vogue India is a natural fit," says Priya Tanna, Editor Vogue India. "It is her first solo cover and a coup of sorts for Vogue. That she is stylish, enigmatic, and poised is known, but at the shoot we saw another side of her, that of a cover girl. Even in the frames she shares with Shah Rukh Khan, she holds her own impressively. She offers delightful peeks into her life, her wardrobe and her man. Gauri is a true Voguette."

The issue will hit newsstands on December 20.

Amitabh, Shah Rukh to clash as Don
Wednesday, December 19, 2007
It looks like the senior and junior Don, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, will battle it out at the box office.

While Farhan Akhtar prepares to plunge into a sequel to his 2006 hit Don - The Chase Begins Again, with Shah Rukh in the lead, the family of Nariman Irani, who made the original Don in 1978 with Amitabh Bachchan, is all set to do their own take on the film with the Big B again.

Speaking on the subject for the first time, the Big B told IANS: "Yes, they (Nariman Irani's family) met me some time back. I'm yet to hear the script."

However, Farhan seems to be completely in the dark regarding this parallel project.

"I've no idea of this. We've very close relations with the Irani family. We've been very clear with each other. When they gave us the rights for remaking Don they gave us the right to exploit the movie for the next three-four years. We had even told them we might be doing a sequel. And they were really cool about it.

"They didn't seem interested in going back and doing anything Don related. From the outset they've been straight with us. I don't think they'd just go around announcing another movie."

But with the Iranis having approached Amitabh, a clash of creative interest between the two Dons featuring the Big B and Shah Rukh seems inevitable.

After Main Hoon Na, SRK-Sush back with a bang
Monday, November 19, 2007
Mumbai: After Main Hoon Na, the unanimous opinion was Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen made a sizzling pair. They are coming together once again in Dulha Mil Gaya.

"Shah Rukh and I are getting together again in Dulha Mil Gaya, though Shah Rukh only makes a guest appearance in the film," Sushmita said.

"The actually reason I'm doing it is the director Mudassar Aziz. He wrote the songs of Zindaggi Rocks. I feel he has tremendous potential. When I heard the script I just fell for it. I guess I'm an emotional sucker," she added.

Bollywood Photo Gallery

This is not for the first time that the actress is working with a debutant director.

"I've become the first-film queen. Look at the number of times I've worked with debutant directors. However, let me add Mudassar's script is outstanding."

In addition, Sushmita has agreed to do another film with comedy king David Dhawan.

"That's been in the offing for a while. He has to finish his two current films. Then we're on. David is someone I can never say no to."

This is her third film with Salman Khan-Dhawan team after super hits Biwi No 1 and Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya?

"I love working with him. We've such a beautiful equation. He's one hero who doesn't let me feel my height. On the contrary whenever I kick off my high heels he asks me to put them on. It's not hard to see why he's so loved."

“The Movie has done very well. I have to do a lot of hard work and enjoy the years to come,” said Deepika.

And she says she owes it all to co-actor Shah Rukh Khan and director Farah Khan.

“I feel like I have a family in Bollywood. I can call them up anytime and they are there for me,” said Deepika.

But talking about real family, do we see Deepika teaming up with her legendary father Prakash Padukone for any brand endorsements in the future?

“I know what to go to dad for and what to not,” said Deepika adding, she would surely do an ad with him.

When asked on her opinion of veteran actor Manoj Kumar's grouse with Om Shanti Om spoofing him, the debutant said, “We didn’t intend to make fun of anyone. We didn’t intend to copy anyone and I don’t want to comment on anyone in particular".

Despite SRK, Deepika makes impact in 'Om Shanti Om'
Monday, November 12, 2007
Although 'Om Shanti Om' is an out-and-out Shah Rukh Khan film, newcomer Deepika Padukone shines through. Be it her grace, poise, dignity and class as a '70s diva or as the spunky contemporary girl in the latter half, the actress plays both roles with commendable finesse and elan.

The film, released Friday, had a phenomenal opening, thanks to the pre-release publicity.

The lovely Deepika, former world badminton champion Prakash Padukone's daughter, literally lights up the screen whenever she comes on. She holds her own in every frame, even when pitted against the larger-than-life superstar Shah Rukh. The newcomer has a beautiful smile and expressive eyes, which she uses to mirror the character's feelings.

"Deepika's performance is so good that you forget she is a newcomer. She is very fresh and her body language exudes oodles of confidence," says Anuradha, who saw the film on Diwali day.

"Shah Rukh's energetic performance is not able to overshadow Deepika. Her emoting is faultless. She carries off the '70s look as well as micro minis equally well," said Geetika Sahai.

While Shah Rukh's fans have lapped up the film, critics too have given favourable reviews. But most seem to have skipped commenting on the film's flaws. They have deliberately brushed its weaknesses under the carpet. But, never mind, the film on the whole is entertaining.

While in "Chak De! India", Shah Rukh slipped under the skin of his character and wowed with his stupendous performance, he disappoints in 'Om Shanti Om'. The superstar is repetitive and does overact at times in the first half. He needs to curtail his unwarranted superstar mannerisms even in a total masala film like 'Om Shanti Om'.

Apart from Deepika, another actor who makes an impact is Arjun Rampal. Farah Khan has done justice to the model-turned-actor by giving him a negative role in which he has proved his mettle. Arjun is able to bring the same kind of unscrupulous cold-blooded feel to his character just like villains of the early '70s.

He plots to kill Deepika, a successful actress who is secretly married to him, because she is pregnant and it poses a threat to his ambitions and career, and succeeds.

Talented Shreyas Talpade, as Shah Rukh's chum, is equally impressive.

'Om Shanti Om' is entertaining, but script-wise weak. Director Farah Khan could have worked on the script a little more to make the takeoff on the '70s golden era funnier. The imitation and spoofs are enjoyable, though at times weak. The finer details of that era are missing.

The film doesn't look like an ode to the golden era of Bollywood, as Farah claims it to be; rather it looks like a satire.

Laxmi Mittal to walk for SRK
Leisceter Square in London will be glittering with the glitterati on Thursday night at the premiere of Om Shanti Om. It is not often that one will get to see the likes of Hollywood actresses like Emma Thompson and steel magnate Laxmi Mittal at the premiere of a Bollywood film.

According to the man in the spotlight, actor Shah Rukh Khan, there will be some special people at the premiere including Emma Thompson and Laxmi Mittal. According to the actor, they are very dear friends of his and he will be extremely glad to get the opportunity to catch up with them as well. The idea to have a premiere in London according to SRK is to attract the global audience and not just the Indian diaspora.

The other factor behind the London premiere was that the film’s distributors, Eros International are based out of London as well. SRK has fond memories of Leisceter Square as he had held the premiere of another of his home productions, Asoka also at the same venue in 2002. That too was a little before Diwali. Chak De also premiered in London. So in a way, London is a little special for SRK. Unpreturbed by the fact that Saawariya premiered last night in Mumbai, the Om Shanti Om team is going to go all out and celebrate the event.

The red carpet before the screening will also be a great photo opportunity for the entire cast of the film, including Deepika Padukone, her parents Prakash and Ujjwala; Arjun Rampal, and of course, SRK himself walking the carpet with his special guests.

Om Shanti Om - Deepika's Story
Saturday, November 10, 2007
Deepika Padukone, making her Bollywood debut, certainly spark-les in Om Shanti Om, heralding possibly the arrival of a fresh talent in the Indian film industry.

There are many models who have made the transition to movies but, by common consent after today’s world premiere in London, there does appear to be something special about Deepika who stars opposite Shah Rukh Khan, the star of Om Shanti Om.

The film, directed by Farah Khan, uses reincarnation as a device to bring the hero and heroine back to life, 30 years after both perish in a fire. While western viewers may be puzzled by the concept of reincarnation, Indian audiences may not quarrel too much with the idea of the dead returning to life.

In this case, the characters played by Shah Rukh and Deepika — Om and Shantipriya — come back looking exactly like themselves and with their memories preserved from the past.

One aspect Shah Rukh made clear was that no religious significance should be attached to the use of reincarnation.

“I don’t believe in reincarnation,” he said bluntly. “The film industry is secular.”

At a news conference after today’s screening at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, Shah Rukh was flanked by Deepika and two of the other cast members, Arjun Rampal, who plays the film’s principal villain, and Shreyas Talpade (of Iqbal fame), who is Shah Rukh’s sidekick in the movie.

Shah Rukh called Om Shanti Om “a film within a film”, which, in a way, it is, for the tale begins with Om, a junior artist, and Shanti, the lead actress, meeting on the sets of Dream Girl. He rescues her when a fire scene goes wrong but is later unable to do so when the villain burns down Shanti on the set of a movie.

But not to worry. Three decades later, they are back, the same people, but with different names.

In between, Om Shanti Om develops into a Bollywood video with 30 stars. There are so many that it is difficult to keep count.

One moment it is Kajol and Rani Mukherjee, the next it is Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Amisha Patel, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt (he must have found time in between his court appearances), Shabana Azmi and Rekha. Some old timers, such as Dharmendra, also join the party as well as Abhishek Bachchan. Even Shilpa Shetty, wearing her sari daringly low, does her bit.

Part of the film is shot in the style of the Hindi movies of the 1970s, which, Shah Rukh said, was “not a spoof”.

“You can make fun of yourself if you are confident of yourself,” Shah Rukh pointed out. It is more than likely that Om Shanti Om will be dissected by cinema academics in the UK for the benefit of their students so that they can identify the originals on which the sketches are based. Madhumati, Sholay, Amar Akbar Antony and Deewar were all mentioned in passing.

Despite its use of reincarnation, Om Shanti Om is not a deep film. But it is harmless fun that families might enjoy over Diwali.

It is only the English cinema scholars in Britain who will subject it to profound analysis.

Deepika is one of those lucky actresses whom the camera obviously loves.

“I could not have had a better launch,” she said.

Turning to Shah Rukh, she paid him a compliment which made everyone laugh: “I have grown up watching your films,” she said.

After the grand success of his movie Chak De India where he played the Hockey Coach of Indian Women's Hockey team, the actor is waiting for the release of Om Shakti Om which is set to release this year.

Though he is working on some other movies too but he is not very sure about their release dates. It happens sometimes Shahrukh..

Good Luck !!
