Aaja Nachle all set to roll again in UP
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Aaja Nachle, Madhuri’s much hyped comeback film had gotten itself embroiled into a ‘lyrical controversy’ just hours after its release in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The state residents were outraged stating that the filmmakers should either take the objectionable lyrics off the film, or else they will take the film off the theatres. The lines, which they found objectionable featuring in the title track of the film goes as ‘Bazaar Mein Machi Hai Maar hai, Bole Mochi Bhi Khud Ko Sunar hai’. These reportedly had offended some of the Dalit organizations. Mayawati, the Chief Minister of UP had even shot off a letter to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh in this regard. The impact of the ban was so much that Punjab had decided to ban the movie today.

In order to avoid any further bans and troubles, Yash Raj Films acted on it immediately and deleted the two objectionable songs. The film’s director Anil Mehta said that they had made the film in good faith and something, which would not hurt any section of the society. He also apologized saying that if the film has hurt the sentiments of anyone, they are ready to delete the said lines.

Mr. Yash Chopra Chairman Yash Raj Films said "It was not our intention to hurt the feelings of any individual or community of our great nation. If we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of anybody I apologise for the same and have taken immediate remedial action by deleting the line from the prints of Aaja Nachle from all over the country. This line has been deleted in all the theatres today. Yash Raj Films makes family oriented films and propagates Indian culture through them and would never do anything that is detrimental to the sentiments of our people."

As they say, all’s well that ends well, so what if the end contains two lines lesser than the original!

Om Shanti Om - Deepika's Story
Saturday, November 10, 2007
Deepika Padukone, making her Bollywood debut, certainly spark-les in Om Shanti Om, heralding possibly the arrival of a fresh talent in the Indian film industry.

There are many models who have made the transition to movies but, by common consent after today’s world premiere in London, there does appear to be something special about Deepika who stars opposite Shah Rukh Khan, the star of Om Shanti Om.

The film, directed by Farah Khan, uses reincarnation as a device to bring the hero and heroine back to life, 30 years after both perish in a fire. While western viewers may be puzzled by the concept of reincarnation, Indian audiences may not quarrel too much with the idea of the dead returning to life.

In this case, the characters played by Shah Rukh and Deepika — Om and Shantipriya — come back looking exactly like themselves and with their memories preserved from the past.

One aspect Shah Rukh made clear was that no religious significance should be attached to the use of reincarnation.

“I don’t believe in reincarnation,” he said bluntly. “The film industry is secular.”

At a news conference after today’s screening at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, Shah Rukh was flanked by Deepika and two of the other cast members, Arjun Rampal, who plays the film’s principal villain, and Shreyas Talpade (of Iqbal fame), who is Shah Rukh’s sidekick in the movie.

Shah Rukh called Om Shanti Om “a film within a film”, which, in a way, it is, for the tale begins with Om, a junior artist, and Shanti, the lead actress, meeting on the sets of Dream Girl. He rescues her when a fire scene goes wrong but is later unable to do so when the villain burns down Shanti on the set of a movie.

But not to worry. Three decades later, they are back, the same people, but with different names.

In between, Om Shanti Om develops into a Bollywood video with 30 stars. There are so many that it is difficult to keep count.

One moment it is Kajol and Rani Mukherjee, the next it is Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Amisha Patel, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt (he must have found time in between his court appearances), Shabana Azmi and Rekha. Some old timers, such as Dharmendra, also join the party as well as Abhishek Bachchan. Even Shilpa Shetty, wearing her sari daringly low, does her bit.

Part of the film is shot in the style of the Hindi movies of the 1970s, which, Shah Rukh said, was “not a spoof”.

“You can make fun of yourself if you are confident of yourself,” Shah Rukh pointed out. It is more than likely that Om Shanti Om will be dissected by cinema academics in the UK for the benefit of their students so that they can identify the originals on which the sketches are based. Madhumati, Sholay, Amar Akbar Antony and Deewar were all mentioned in passing.

Despite its use of reincarnation, Om Shanti Om is not a deep film. But it is harmless fun that families might enjoy over Diwali.

It is only the English cinema scholars in Britain who will subject it to profound analysis.

Deepika is one of those lucky actresses whom the camera obviously loves.

“I could not have had a better launch,” she said.

Turning to Shah Rukh, she paid him a compliment which made everyone laugh: “I have grown up watching your films,” she said.

Bhool Bhulaiya - Movie Review
Friday, October 12, 2007
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Ameesha Patel, Shiney Ahuja, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Manoj Joshi, Vineet, Asrani, Tarina, Rasika Joshi, Vikram Gokhale
Director: Priyadarshan
Producor: Bhushan Kumar & Krishan Kumar
Music Director: Pritam
Rating: **1/2

In Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Priyadarshan has attempted an image makeover. A director known for comedy, Priyadarshan tries to come up with something different. But the question would be: Is the new product good enough?

The film takes off with the director establishing the place with some jerky shots, each fading out and giving a clear view of a religions river bank – Varanasi. And then we are directly taken into the haunted haveli about which the story is all about.

Siddharth Chaturvedi (Shiney Ahuja) who stays in America comes back to his village with his newly-wed wife Avni (Vidya Balan). Being a guy with modern outlook he would not believe in ghosts and decides to stay in the palace. Things take a turn when Avni unlocks the door to a forbidden room. Suddenly people hear and see things. Inside the room, they believe are two spirits. One was a court-dancer and the other her lover. The king had killed the lover and locked the dancer in the room where she committed suicide. Nice setting for a traditional ghost movie.

Siddharth's friend Aditya (Akshay Kumar) is a world renowned psychiatrist who also has vast knowledge in paranormal science. He lands up at the palace from America to solve the puzzle. And he goes on to reveal who is the ghost and how things are happening.

The film goes on to show that it's Avni who has been creating the problem. And Aditya pulls in all his scientific gyaan on this case to prove things. Avni apparently feels so much of the old dancer that she starts imagining that she is the dancer herself. She shows a case of multiple persona and tries killing Siddharth, who she perceives as the king. Aditya does cure her after creating an elaborate set up – which is very much against scientific practices. And as soon as this drama is over, the other girl, who has never uttered a word ever since she had supposedly seen the ghost as a child, is fine too.

With the film's explanation of being possessed being answered scientifically, there are very subtle and almost invisible, if at all, reference to how this girl took possessed and later cured. There certainly was no Avni around when she had seen the ghost. Also one thing that beats the audience is Avni speaking in Bengali as she had never been to Bengal. And Priyadarshan choses to keep this unanswered.

The film is a mixture of the regular Priyadarshan brand comedy and thrill. And both the thrill and comedy is derived from the same aspect – the fear for ghosts. However the humour at times goes overboard.

Especially during the first fifteen minutes where we see Asrani and Paresh Rawal trying too hard to make us laugh. There are also too many characters in the film, of which the last couple introduced just don't add anything to the movie. The arrival of the married couple makes things better as the story unfolds at the faster rate. Yet, we still have outlandish comedy here and there. The film gives a chill down your back at certain instances like when Akshay Kumar tries to find who's dancing so late at night. The background music or silence is used really well for this. The last scene where Akshay tries his hypnotic skills on Vidya Balan in a dark room is funny. Do you really need to place your hand over the patient's face to complete the process!

One thing that stands out in the film is the photography, that's done really well. And the choreography, especially the last song where Vidya Balan shows her classical dancing skills is done well.

The performances of the actors look somehow hiked up. Asrani overacts, so does Paresh Rawal. Mahan Joshi is fine. Ameesha Patel still has to frown everytime she speaks. Shiney is good, but he should never lip sync to songs. That doesn't suit him. Akshay Kumar comes up with another great performance and so does Vidya Balan, who is wonderful in the last few minutes.

Priyadarshan attempts to make a psychological thriller falls short due to some simple problems in the script. It's neither a Bhoot nor is it an Aks. Bhool Bhulaiyaa is confusing.

Wait to be over - OSO's 'Deewangee' to be out on Id
Monday, October 8, 2007
Ever since the promotion of OM SHANTI OM began, all eyes were set on one song - 'Deewangee'. Clearly the best of the lot that Vishal-Shekhar have to offer in their soundtrack for this Farah Khan film, the song was much anticipated, also due to the presence of 31 stars in it.

Come 'Id' and the song would finally be all over the music channels with the teasers already making a round in the internet world. Just on hearing the audio, one got hooked to the song. A sure shot chartbuster which could well have been the opening number for the film's promotion, 'Deewangi Deewangi' is what qualifies as a trademark number which could have been lapped up by Yash Raj Films or Dharma Productions.

Singers like Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena (heard in Indian Idol) ensure that there is not a single dull moment in this instant-attention-grabbing track.

Boasting of the innocence in melody that was witnessed in the 70s and now presented in the 21st century 'avtar' with a fusion of 'qawalli', 'bhangra' and western arrangements, 'Deewangi Deewangi' that also incorporates the sound of 'Om Shanti Om', is all set to lit up the screen when it is played.

The song also appears in a remix version which is termed as 'Rainbow Mix'. The other songs which have already been aired across all channels and have found instant appreciation are the love song 'Aankhon Mein Teri', dance number 'Dard-E-Disco' and the romantic 'Main Agar Kahoon' where Shahrukh Khan serenades Deepika Padukone.

SAAWARIYA title song creates a stir
Thursday, September 20, 2007
Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network

Barely a couple of days have gone by since the first look of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor was unveiled in the title song promotion of SAAWARIYA and the buzz surrounding the debutant leads has been unparalleled.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's love for making every frame count in his cinema was notable in the very first teaser of the film which bears resemblance to a painting. Now his love for music is pretty apparent too with title song 'Saawariya' turning out to be instantly catchy in the first listening itself.

Composed by Monty, the song is young-n-fresh and very urban. Picturised on Ranbir, who seems to be giving a stage performance with a guitar in tow, the song 'Saawariya' comes across as a fresh-n-innocent song, something which was the hallmark of music composed by Jatin-Lalit in their heydays.

Music launch of the film has taken place very recently and the album would be out on the stands by this weekend.
