Bollywood Gossip - Ranbir to perform on Bachna Ae Haseeno
Monday, May 5, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : By now its common knowledge that Ranbir Kapoor's next release Bachna Ae Haseeno directed by Siddharth Raj Anand borrows its title from his father Rishi Kapoor's evergreen number from Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. But now the latest heartthrob will even move his feet to a song called Bachna Ae Haseeno for the film.

Choreographer Ahmed Khan who would be choreographing the Saawariya lad in this film says, “Yes, we are having a song called 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' and it will feature Ranbir along with the 3 girls- Bipasha, Deepika and Minissha. It will be mainly used as promotional number for the film. Since Rishi-ji's number is still a cult hit, they decided to have Ranbir also perform to a song which has similar lyrics. Vishal and Shekhar have composed the music for the song,” he adds.

So how has been the experience shooting with tinsel-town's latest pin-up boy, “It has been great. I shot a song with him in Mumbai at Yashraj studios. It's a commercial Indian song which we did. He is a brilliant dancer. In Saawariya, baring a number or two, he didn't really get much of a chance to showcase his dancing skills but he has got that rhythm in his genes. His father and uncle Shammi-ji have all been brilliant dancers and even Ranbir has his own style. I would be going to Switzerland and Venice now to finish 3 songs for the film and after we return we would shoot the 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' number,” says the choreographer-turned-director.

We also asked Ahmed on the status of his next film Paathshala, “The post-production is currently on. We would start the dubbing of the film sometime next month. We are planning a Children's Day release (Nov 14th) so we have ample amount of time on our hands”, he smiles.

Meanwhile Ahmed's wife Shaira Khan who turns producer with Paathshala is already planning her next project, “Yes, her next film is about what goes on in a girl's heart. It is essentially a journey through a girl's heart and what do girls want from guys and all that stuff etc. The film is a light, fun film on the lines of Drew Barrymore, Meg Ryan, Adam Sandler's kind of flicks. The film would star one girl and three guys. We would be finalizing the names within a fortnight or so,” reveals Ahmed.

With choreographing, direction and now production, Ahmed surely has his hands full.

Preity off to Phuket for New Year
Friday, December 28, 2007
She is taking a well-earned vacation. After shooting as the derelict NRI wife in Deepa Mehra's Heaven On Earth, Preity Zinta is off to Phuket, Thailand with her friends to bring in the New Year.

Last year at this time Preity had injured herself during a vacation.

"The year has been a tough one for me," groaned Preity. "Not only did I suffer a serious injury, it has also been a year of tough challenges for me as an actor."

"In 2007, I went into another kind of cinema altogether. From doing Yash Raj Films to playing a woman who finds herself at the receiving end of life in Heaven On Earth has been quite a creative and cultural shock for me," said Preity.

The actress is, however, quick to point out the film isn't only about a battered wife.

"It's about all the people who leave India and hope to find paradise abroad, only to be stuck on wretched 16-hour jobs with no happiness or sunshine. I never knew how such marginalized women existed until I played one," she said.

"Deepa Mehta and Heaven On Earth have proved eye openers for me. But the film was tough on me emotionally. In the month that I was in Toronto, I went out just twice and that too to maintain my sanity. I really need a break now," added the actress who had only one commercial release this year.

She featured in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol, but it bombed. Preity will return from her vacation in the second week of January with a clear date diary.

Despite SRK, Deepika makes impact in 'Om Shanti Om'
Monday, November 12, 2007
Although 'Om Shanti Om' is an out-and-out Shah Rukh Khan film, newcomer Deepika Padukone shines through. Be it her grace, poise, dignity and class as a '70s diva or as the spunky contemporary girl in the latter half, the actress plays both roles with commendable finesse and elan.

The film, released Friday, had a phenomenal opening, thanks to the pre-release publicity.

The lovely Deepika, former world badminton champion Prakash Padukone's daughter, literally lights up the screen whenever she comes on. She holds her own in every frame, even when pitted against the larger-than-life superstar Shah Rukh. The newcomer has a beautiful smile and expressive eyes, which she uses to mirror the character's feelings.

"Deepika's performance is so good that you forget she is a newcomer. She is very fresh and her body language exudes oodles of confidence," says Anuradha, who saw the film on Diwali day.

"Shah Rukh's energetic performance is not able to overshadow Deepika. Her emoting is faultless. She carries off the '70s look as well as micro minis equally well," said Geetika Sahai.

While Shah Rukh's fans have lapped up the film, critics too have given favourable reviews. But most seem to have skipped commenting on the film's flaws. They have deliberately brushed its weaknesses under the carpet. But, never mind, the film on the whole is entertaining.

While in "Chak De! India", Shah Rukh slipped under the skin of his character and wowed with his stupendous performance, he disappoints in 'Om Shanti Om'. The superstar is repetitive and does overact at times in the first half. He needs to curtail his unwarranted superstar mannerisms even in a total masala film like 'Om Shanti Om'.

Apart from Deepika, another actor who makes an impact is Arjun Rampal. Farah Khan has done justice to the model-turned-actor by giving him a negative role in which he has proved his mettle. Arjun is able to bring the same kind of unscrupulous cold-blooded feel to his character just like villains of the early '70s.

He plots to kill Deepika, a successful actress who is secretly married to him, because she is pregnant and it poses a threat to his ambitions and career, and succeeds.

Talented Shreyas Talpade, as Shah Rukh's chum, is equally impressive.

'Om Shanti Om' is entertaining, but script-wise weak. Director Farah Khan could have worked on the script a little more to make the takeoff on the '70s golden era funnier. The imitation and spoofs are enjoyable, though at times weak. The finer details of that era are missing.

The film doesn't look like an ode to the golden era of Bollywood, as Farah claims it to be; rather it looks like a satire.
