Bollywood Gossip - Kismet Connection Vs Contract
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : After last week's releases, which include Mehbooba and Mukhbiir, proved to be damp squibs at the box office, Bollywood trade circles have now set their eyes on Kismat Konnection and Contract that are releasing this Friday.

After the poor performances of Good Luck and Rituparno Ghosh's Khela as well, both the new movies are worth looking forward to because two fine directors, Aziz Mirza and Ram Gopal Varma, are at the helm.

While Mirza is known for making light-hearted romantic fare, Varma scores when he makes gangster movies dealing with subjects related to the underworld.

As Mirza has returned to direction after five years - his last directorial venture was "Chalte Chalte" - so has Varma visited a gangster movie to direct after six years since "Company" in 2002.

Kismat Konnection has generated a lot of expectations also because this is Shahid Kapur's second release after last year's hit Jab We Met, in which he was paired with his ex-love Kareena Kapoor.

Will his kismat (luck) stays with him through the release of Kismat Konnection, sans Kareena? For Shahid-Kareena made a fantastic pair in Jab We Met. Will his pairing with Vidya Balan in Kismat Konnection work equally well for the both?

"Comparison is uncalled-for, because both Jab We Met and Kismat Konnection have approached romance in different ways. All three are good artists, but there are roles in which some fit and others do not. Vidya fits in the role of Priya she has done in my film," said Mirza.

The other attractions of the movie are the boisterous presence of Juhi Chawla and the voiceover given by Shah Rukh Khan.

Contract, on the other hand, has no stars to boast of other than the director himself. Newcomer Adhvik Mahajan is playing the main lead in it.

Since Varma finds himself in his element when he directs gangster films, Contract is expected to be a hard-hitting movie like his previous hits - Satya and Company.

But, according to Varma, Contract is not exactly a gangster movie. It is mainly about the underworld's links with terrorism told through a terrorist who is well aware of the gangland activities.

After the lukewarm response to Sarkar Raj, will non-star-cast Contract succeed at the box office?

"Since it is a theme-based film, it will be a slow-starter, but eventually may do well through word-of-mouth publicity," said a trade analyst.

Some distributors of Contract reportedly, had suggested Varma to defer the release till August in order not to avoid clash with Kismat Konnection. But he refused to oblige them, reasoning that the two are diametrically opposite movies.

Thursday, May 1, 2008

Bollywood Gossip
: After Being Cyrus, Saif Ali Khan and Homi Adajania team up yet again with their second venture Thagi, an action flick which will be made under Saif's production house Illuminati Films.

Thagi, an action film is about a crook (thag) played by Saif who goes on a conning spree. When contacted Homi Adajania confirmed the news and said, "Yes, I am in talks with Saif about Thagi. But I can't disclose any more details at this point of time."

According to sources, Saif chose Adajania as his director because he feels their sensibilities match and work wonders together on screen. Thagi is going to be an out and out masala caper but with Saif and Homi's sensibilities.

Looks like, after his much appreciated act in Being Cyrus, Saif is all set to wow the audience with yet another maverick performance.

Bollywood Gossip - Multiplex say "NO" Tashan

Bollywood Gossips : Yash Raj Films' much-awaited action thriller Tashan has opened in a select few cinema halls.

Multiplexes are waging a battle on who gets the most the distributor or the producer.

PVR Cinemas and Inox in Mumbai are not screening the film. In Delhi too mulitplexes like Adlabs and PVR have said a straight no.

"We had asked Inox, Fame and Adlabs multiplexes to give 60 per cent of the revenue collected in the first week. Tashan is a film that will easily earn enough revenues for the multiplexes and us. I don't think the increase in revenue percentage is too high," said Sanjeev Kohli, CEO of Yash Raj Films.

Amitabh Vardhan, CEO, PVR Cinemas, said: "As of now we don't have the film. As far as the revenue sharing is concerned, I would not like to comment on that."

Arijit Dutta, a Kolkata-based exhibitor-distributor, is more forthright.

"I don't understand why we have to pay higher revenue when the business in Kolkata is 10 times less than other metros. This year revenue has been hiked by 12 percent here, whereas Mumbai and Delhi multiplexes were asked to pay only two per cent more," said Dutta.

Till Friday morning none of the parties had reached any agreement and the film has opened in only single screen theatres. Apart from them, the Waves and Spice multiplexes are having shows of the film.

The Krishna Acharya directed film starring Kareena, Saif, Akshay and Anil Kapoor is an edge of the seat thriller.

Bollywood Gossip - Kareena's dream finally come true
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Kareena Kapoor

Bollywood Gossip : It’s finally happening. Bollywood has put together the dream team of Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan for Raj Kumar Hirani’s film Idiots. Kareena, who has signed on three big projects lately, including Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakht Ishq with Akshay Kumar and Renzel d’Silva’s untitled film with beau Saif Ali Khan, is thrilled to be working with Aamir. “It’s a dream,” she exclaimed, “we recently came close to working on two films together, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Mr Mehta And Mrs Singh and Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo, but it’s finally happening now.”

She is also looking forward to doing another film with Saif after Omkara and Tashan. “Renzil’s film has a stunning script. And I’m doing something in it I’ve never done before,” she said, declining to elaborate. But she added, “It’s important to keep our personal and professional lives apart. Saif and I need to concentrate on our individual careers. There’s no marriage for me for the next five years.”

As for Tashan, she’s worked really hard on the film and is hoping her hard work pays, because “it wouldn’t hurt to have another hit after Jab We Met”. Right now, she is at peace with herself. She’s looking fab and feeling great. “People are saying I want to be like Victoria Beckham. I think the talk started when Saif got himself tattooed with my name. David Beckham had done the same for Victoria. But I’m proud of my sculpted body. Why should I want to be like anyone else? I look no different from the way I looked earlier. I guess I’m just happy in life, and that shows,” said Kareena.

Bollywood Gossip - No Entry for Bipasha in sequel
Sunday, February 17, 2008
Bollywood Gossips - Boney Kapoor is all set to start his No Entry sequel this year finally. “The film will be called No Entry Mein Entry. We are currently working on its script. And will soon start the project”, confirms Boney Kapoor

The original blockbuster directed by Anees Bazmee had an ensemble starcast of Bollywood Actors Salman Khan, Fardeen Khan, Anil Kapoor, Lara Dutta, Esha Deol, Celina Jaitley and Bipasha Basu in lead roles. Will the same cast be repeated in the sequel? “Well, more or less it will have the same star cast”, says Boney. When we prod him more he adds, “Salman will surely be there. So will be others, except Bipasha Basu”.

Bipasha Basu [ Exclusive Photo Gallery ]

But why is only Bollywood Actress Bipasha being left out? Does it have anything to do with Bollywood Actor Salman Khan who shares cold vibes with John Abraham? Rumours say Actor Salman doesn’t want to work with John’s girlfriend Bipasha now.

Is that the reason, we ask Boney? “No it’s not true. Bipasha is not cast in the sequel because her chapter was closed in No Entry itself. We are working on a new story and once we are done with that we will be able to announce the final star cast”, clarifies the producer.

Meanwhile, Bollywood Actress Bipasha Basu seems to be unaware about the sequel and has no idea why she hasn’t been approached for
No Entry Mein Entry.

Bollywood News - Gowariker must change script: Rajputs
Jaipur Feb 16, 2008 : Unwilling to give way, a Rajput group opposing Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa Akbar said it will not allow the film's screening in Rajasthan until he apolgises to the community and changes the script deleting portions of "distorted historical facts" from it.

"We will not allow screening of Jodhaa Akbar till the makers of the film submits a public apology for hurting the sentiments of the Rajputs," Karni Sena patron Lokendra Kalvi, told a news conference.

He further laid down the condition that "he must be ready to change the film's script".

He cited an NCERT plus-two history text book on 'Medieval India' by Professor Satish Chandra that Jodhabai was the wife of Saleem (Jehangir), son of Akbar the great, in support of their contention that the film distorts history.

"None of Akbar's 34 wives had the name, surname, nick name, or alias of Jodhaa. How could one change it now," Kalvi said.

Bollywood News - Bollywood cries tax cut
Monday, February 11, 2008
Mumbai, Feb 11 (IANS) : In the entertainment world, everybody is a freelancer. There is no job security for the movie fraternity in Bollywood or anywhere in the world.

To top it, producers in India have to pay a host of direct and indirect taxes at the time of making movies that leave them poorer by millions.

Once such cess is the money paid to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) by producers while obtaining censor certificates for movies. The current censor board cess slab stands at Rs.20,000 for every Hindi movie and Rs.10,000 for a regional language movie.

Producers all over the country, particularly those in Bollywood, have renewed their demand for lowering of censor cess.

The Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), the largest body of producers, has written to Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes suggesting that movies made on a budget of less than Rs.100 million should be exempted from the cess.

'We are demanding this because 90 percent Hindi and regional movies are low-budget ventures and only 10 percent producers make big-budget movies,' senior vice president of IMPPA Sushama Shiromanee said. She also suggested that the television sector be also brought under the purview of the cess to lessen the burden on film producers.

Nearly 1.2 million people in India live out of movies. Bollywood alone provides sustenance to over 100,000 workers engaged in different crafts of filmmaking.

'Knowing the fickle nature of our profession, if those in the business of entertainment tend to make most of the transient time when the going is good, should anybody grudge their riches?' asked Bollywood actor and television star Shekhar Suman.

Ideally, nobody should. Because, unless one is highly talented and blessed, the career span of the people in the entertainment business is so small that they are literally here today and gone tomorrow.

'While the resourceful can tide over the problem with ease, the situation becomes worse for those who make a living out of movies by earning a daily wage. They include the craftsmen of the industry, generally referred to as its backbone,' said Dharmesh Tiwari, president of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), the apex body of 22 crafts associations in the industry.

'Since they are not permanent employees of the producers, they do not get the benefits workers are entitled to in other industries. When they are out of job, they are entirely on their own. They have nothing to fall back upon except their savings,' Tiwari explained.

While admitting that Bollywood indeed is a wealthy place, he said contrary to the general impression, not everybody in Bollywood wallows in riches. 'The wealth is concentrated only in certain pockets and it is only they who provide the veneer of glamour to the industry,' he stressed.

Not only cine employees who earn daily wages, several producers and actors barely manage to scratch a living out of movies, Tiwari said. 'When they retire from films, they have nothing to take back home in terms of retirement benefits,' he rued.

If producers go bankrupt after a series of flops, they disappear from the scene. Cine workers and artistes, however, can fall back on two welfare pools during bad times.

The Office of the Welfare Commissioner under the central Ministry of Labour manages the Cine Workers' Welfare Fund while the artistes themselves generate resources for the Cine Artiste's Welfare Fund.

'Though the government says it provides relief to fraternity members in need from the Cine Workers' Welfare Fund, it actually generates money for the fund indirectly from the industry itself,' said a producer not wishing to be named.

The cess paid by the producers to the censor board at the time of procuring censor certificates goes to the Cine Workers' Welfare Fund and is disbursed to cine workers in need through the office of the Welfare Commissioner in Nagpur.

This has created a rift between producers and cine artistes and workers in Mumbai. While producers insist that the cess should be reduced, the cine employees federation has urged the government to hike the cess.

The cess currently fetches about Rs.8 million every year countrywide.

Hrithik's sister, Sunaina, enters Bollywood
Wednesday, January 23, 2008
The Bollywood bug seems to have bitten a new Roshan. After Hrithik, his sister Sunaina will be making her debut in films. Well, not as an actor, but as a producer. “Sunaina is co-producing Krazzy 4 with me,” informs Rakesh Roshan.

Krazzy 4 has two of Bollywood's superstars SRK and Hrithik doing item numbers. “We just finished shooting Shah Rukh's item number. Hrithik will shoot for his item number on February 15”, states Rakesh Roshan. “The film is about four mentally unstable people who escape from the mental hospital in order to explore the world. They are out on a one-day trip. The film goes on to show if these four characters are crazy or is it the world that is actually crazy,” narrates Roshan.

He further adds, “Krazzy 4 features Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Rajpal Yadav and Suresh Menon as the crazy characters while Juhi Chawla plays a psychiatrist. The film also has Dia Mirza and Rajat Kapoor who is Juhi's husband in the film.”

Krazzy 4 is directed by Jaideep Sen and is slated to release in the month of April. Its theatrical promos will be showcased along with the screening of Sunday.

Jodhaa Akbar : 15th February is final
A number of stories concerning Jodhaa Akbar are doing the rounds of the industry. The topic of discussion is that the film won't make it on the scheduled date since the post-production isn't complete yet [it's currently in the mixing stages] and Ashutosh Gowariker is in no mood to hurry things up. Translated into simple terms, it means the historical might not make it on 15th February, the final date locked by Gowariker and UTV.

Another story [rumour] doing the rounds is that the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions are likely to be delayed as well, since the makers would be keen to get the Hindi version in place first. Which means, the South version would be pushed ahead by a couple of weeks.

Absolutely false, Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV sets the record straight, The Hindi version as well as the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions will have the same day and date release. There's no question of a postponement now. I hope people stop speculating.

But what everyone's curious to know is the final length of this colossal historical. There're murmurs that the film will be of 3 + hour duration. Await the official announcement from Gowariker on that one!
