Supreme Court issues notice to Bhansali
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
The Supreme Court today sought response from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a plea seeking vacation of stay on criminal proceedings against him in connection with a fire on the set of his film Black.

The fire was allegedly caused due to use of LPG cylinders.

A Bench comprising Justices C K Thakker and D K Jain issued notice to Bhansali on a petition filed by Farida Husseinally, an antique dealer, who had sourced some unique furniture for the set of the movie.

The antique dealer allegedly lost furniture worth Rs two crore which included heavy bronze, copper and items.

The dealer in his complaint in the Magistrate's court in Borivali had contended that use of LPG cylinders on the set was a criminal offence under the provisions of law regulating the petroleum gas.

Husseinally through her counsel Vishwnath Chaturvedi has challenged the Bombay High Court order staying the criminal proceedings claiming that the director was in the habit of putting his films sets on fire for duping the insurance companies.

She alleged that during the shooting of the film on February 18, 2004 the set was put on fire to seek hefty compensation.

The antique dealer further claimed that on her enquiry she came to know that before the alleged fire, Bhansali had removed all the items supplied by her from the set of the film.

After complaint was lodged in 2006, Bhansali had moved the High Court, seeking the quashing of the criminal case registered against him in the court in Borivali.

November 9 is a big day in Bollywood for two reasons: Om Shanti Om and Saawariya.

Hey Wait!! There needs some change. In an unprecedented move, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sony Pictures have decided to premiere their movie Saawariya on November 7 evening, which is two days ahead of its mega release on November 9.

Bollywood Movies are generally premiered 14 hours before its final release date because the producer and director try to avert any chance of negative publicity. However, in this case.. Sanjay seems to be very much confident about his movie and says that they dont care about any negative publicity.

Sony Pictures says with Diwali on November 9, people would be spending time offering pooja and meeting their near/ dear ones and he doesnt want to create inconvenience of the guests for the premier show.

Sony Pictures is believed to release 600 prints of the movie in India and about 900 more globally.

Here's some more on the film and its debutant hero Ranbir Kapoor. The towel dropping shot in the number Jab Se Tere Naina from the film has been dropped by the Censor Board. Bhansali is not complaining as the shot obstructs or disturbs the flow of his creativity. The director was offered the choice of keeping the nude shot with an Adults Only certificate. But the filmmaker did not want to lose an extremely large and crucial portion of the potential audience for that one shot.

We are having sleepless nights!
Monday, November 5, 2007
The first Indian film produced by a Hollywood studio - Columbia pictures - 'Saawariya' is all set for some stiff competition from another mega-star mega-budget Indian film - 'Om Shanti Om', when both films hit the theaters November 9.

While the 'OSO' produced by the Baadshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan has, besides him, a galaxy of stars promoting the film, its fallen upon the two new kids on the block - Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor - to promote their film 'Saawariya'.

So even when they visited the city to promote their film, the two debutantes were facing the media queries on their own.

Ranbir Kapoor - son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor and fourth generation kid of the famous Kapoor gharana -understands and acknowledges the possible threats to his maiden film at the BO.

"It's unfortunate that both the movies are releasing on the same day. It does affect business. But it's festive season and I am sure it can hold two films. The entire team of 'Saawariya' wishes 'OSO' all the best and I am sure they wish well for us too," says Ranbir.

But he accepts being nervous, though seems all committed to shoulder the responsibility to publicise his film.

"Honestly, this being Sonam's and my first film that itself giving us sleepless nights. I don't think of it coming with Shah Rukh Khan.

He is too big a star. He's been in the industry for such a long time. We can't even think of going head to head with him," he says.

But he further adds, "He's the biggest actor in the country, but we have the biggest director in the country - Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is the USP of the film."

Ranbir and Sonam both admit that, being a starkids it was easier for them to get a start in the industry, but says that their lineage will lead to unnecessary scrutiny and criticism as well.

"I wouldn't have met Sanjay Leela Bhansali if I wasn't Anil Kapoor's daughter. But at the same time, I'll have expectations, a baggage put on me. I'll be compared to my father all the time," confesses Sonam.

Ranbir seconds her by saying, "I completely agree with Sonam. The comparisons are made, the expectations are too much

You are under like a microscope because they are going to compare everything right from your hair strand to your nail. You can't escape that."

She, however, adds, "But interestingly, right now top stars not star kids. SRK, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra none of them has a lineage except Abhishek Bachchan."

Ranbir quickly adds, "But don't take away our hard work. We also work really hard to live up to expectations. Because you come from so and so family and comparison are gonna be made, so its really hard to make a niche for your self."

Sonam pitches in, "At the end, it what the audience want and what they like. Who they accept and who they don't. So it all up to the audience, your destiny and your hard work."

The film also stars, established names like Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji. Ranbir maintains he's thankful to them for their contribution to the film.

"Though I have no scene with Salman, but I learned so much while sharing screen space with Rani. Rani is such a fabulous actor," he says.

Is Sanjay Bhansali making Hamari Jaan Ho Tum?
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
By Subhash K. Jha

If reports from an imaginative section of the media are to be believed, Sanjay Bhansali has already firmed in on his next project. And it's called; hold your breath, Hamari Jaan Ho Tum.

Before we moved ahead with this mushy mythical yarn, let's rewind quickly to the exquisite soundtrack of Saawariya where one of the most melodious tracks has the cutest love lyrics that go, ‘Thode badmaash ho tum thode nadaan ho tum / haan magar yeh sach hai hamari jaan ho tum’.

Indeed Hamari Jaan Ho Tum was an idea that the moviemaking magician was toying with after the success of Black. It was a story about young love in which Sanjay wanted to cast Udit Narayan's son and Mahesh Bhatt-Soni Razdan's daughter.

So is that going to be his next project? Laughs the beleaguered director, "Right now I’m too consumed by the release of Saawariya to even think about what I'll do next. My music composer Monty Sharma and I are busy putting together the background score. Do you know, Monty is the first composer I've worked with who writes music? He knows the musical notations and he puts every note of a tune down on paper before recording them. Such precision in musicianship I’ve never encountered before. I can't think beyond Monty and his music right now."

As for Hamari Jaan Ho Tum, Sanjay has no plans of making that in the immediate future.

The Next Super Star of Bollywood - Ranbir Kapoor
Sunday, September 23, 2007
Ranbir Kapoor , the son of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, is the latest Bollywood entrant from the famous Kapoor clan.

What better way to start one’s acting career than with a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie? Yes, Ranbir has got a dream start to his Bollywood career. He will make his debut in Bhansali’s project Saanvariya , which also introduces Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam Kapoor .

Even as Ranbir is still busy shooting for his first movie, talks have begun to cast him in more projects. His dad, Rishi Kapoor, is looking forward to revive RK Films banner with a movie starring Ranbir in the lead role.

Rishi has already made a request to Rajkumar Hirani ( Lage Raho Munnabhai director) to direct a film for RK Banner. While Hirani has declined to make the film, he has agreed to cast the 24-year-old Ranbir in his next movie which will not be a Munnabhai series.

The film, yet untitled, will be Hirani’s take on the present day education system. It will be about striving to be successful, and how the joy of learning is gone in modern education.

Hirani is presently working on the first draft of the film’s script with Abhijat Joshi. The project will go on the floors in the first quarter of 2007.

On a different front, talks are on to rope in Ranbir and Sonam for the lead roles in the sequel to the yesteryear’s hit ‘Mr. India’.

The sequel will be directed by Nikhil Advani, the director of Kal Ho Na Ho . The film might also mark the comeback of Sridevi and Anil Kapoor .

However, the cast is still to be finalized.

In the meantime, Ranbir continues to grab headlines, partly because of his good looks and partly because of the compliments that keep coming intermittently from Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

SAAWARIYA title song creates a stir
Thursday, September 20, 2007
Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network

Barely a couple of days have gone by since the first look of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor was unveiled in the title song promotion of SAAWARIYA and the buzz surrounding the debutant leads has been unparalleled.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's love for making every frame count in his cinema was notable in the very first teaser of the film which bears resemblance to a painting. Now his love for music is pretty apparent too with title song 'Saawariya' turning out to be instantly catchy in the first listening itself.

Composed by Monty, the song is young-n-fresh and very urban. Picturised on Ranbir, who seems to be giving a stage performance with a guitar in tow, the song 'Saawariya' comes across as a fresh-n-innocent song, something which was the hallmark of music composed by Jatin-Lalit in their heydays.

Music launch of the film has taken place very recently and the album would be out on the stands by this weekend.
