Bollywood Gossip - Amitabh saddened at Vijay Tendulkar's death
Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Bollywood Gossips : (IANS) Vijay Tendulkar was a person who took a committed stand and stood by it, says Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, expressing his admiration for the eminent playwright who died Monday.

'Vijay Tendulkarji was a strong and fearless writer and a great mind. I am deeply saddened to hear the news of his passing away,' Amitabh told IANS from London, where he is with the entire family after attending the Cannes film festival.

'I never had the opportunity of spending any quality time with him, but I did meet him during common social events. Barring the exchange of courtesies and acknowledging each others' creative contribution, such moments were rushed and hurried. But one read a lot about him in the media and through his interviews.'

Amitabh was full of admiration for the man who re-wrote many rules of stage-writing. 'In today's world it is difficult and tough to take a committed stand and pursue it. Vijay Tendulkarji did. And that was his strength. At times this stand is the solitary voice of reason often misunderstood but seldom wrong.'

There was regret for not having known Tendulkar more closely. 'The greatness about words and writers is that much after they are gone their thoughts remain with us. In fact the sad irony of life is that in most cases, it is only when they are gone do we realise their potential and their great contribution.'

Coincidentally Tendulkar died of myasthenia gravis, a disease that has also afflicted the Big B.

'In my case it is thankfully in remission. But it can return any moment,' he ends ominously before returning to the family for the rest of the holiday.

Bollywood Gossip - Amitabh seems to be happy with Ash
Monday, May 19, 2008
Bollywood Gossip : Following the footsteps of his darling bahu, Big B has also made it to Cannes.

On visiting Cannes, Amitabh Bachchan has said the family was there to be with daughter-in-law Aishwarya, who is a brand ambassador of L'Oreal, and to spend quality time with one another.

"We went to the opening with her (Aishwarya) and a few films together, but mostly it is to be with family because we've all been away from each other for a long time in different parts of the world. It's lovely to just be together and catch up, before we drift away to our respective schedules," Amitabh said.

On being asked if he is in Cannes, the actor replied, "Yes I am in Cannes and with the family. This is a private visit and there are no films I am representing. I believe there was an article criticising us for not visiting the India pavilion. Well, firstly, this is a private visit and moreover, no one has invited us. And secondly, I am a little wary of government invitations. They invite you to be chief guest at a function and when you arrive there, tell you you are not invited."

"We are here to be with Aishwarya, who is here in an official capacity as brand ambassador for L'Oreal. We went to the opening with her and a few films together, but mostly it is to be with family because we've all been away from each other for a long time in different parts of the world. It's lovely to just be together and catch up before we drift away to our respective schedules," he added.

Bollywood Gossip - "I'm not playing Mujibur Rahman" says Amitabh Bachchan
Monday, May 5, 2008
Amitabh Bachchan [ Click here for more pictures ]

Exclusive Bollywood Gossip
: A report in a section of the press stating that Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan would be playing the role of Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has the mega-star completely stumped, puzzled, and amused.

"I've no idea what all this is about. Lots of media persons have been calling since yesterday. I can't say where and how this report originated from. But it is not true," said the Big B from London on Saturday morning just before he boarded his flight back to Mumbai. Not only does the report state with absolute authority that the Big B plays Mujbir Rahman, it also quotes the film's producer as saying that the rest of the Bachchan clan, Abhishek and Aishwarya, will also feature in this bio-pic.

Continues the Big B, "I've no clue about this. There's nothing to it. At least not as far as I'm concerned. I'm hearing all this talk about this film for the first time." This isn't the first time that producers have made premature or unfounded announcements about the Big B's presence in a project. But it would have been interesting to watch him play a historical character. In all these years of superstardom, the Big B has never played a biographic figure. The closest he came to it was in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar where his role had shades of Bal Thackeray.

Bollywood Gossip - It's Bachchans vs. Kapoors vs. SRK
Friday, April 25, 2008
Right from the times of the patriarch Raj Kapoor, the Kapoor khandaan has always had a stronghold on the Filmfare awards ceremony. This time it was no different.

This year the Best Actress Award, Filmfare 2008 went to Kareena Kapoor; the Best Debutant's Award to Ranbir Kapoor and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Rishi Kapoor. Quite evidently, it was a complete Kapoor sweep once again.

Similar to the Kapoor Khandaan, another khandaan's hoping to make a sweep. Not at the Filmfare, but at IIFA - the rival awards show that has Amitabh Bachchan as the brand Ambassador.

The Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer Guru is nominated here in almost every category. The other award staples include Yash Raj and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.

These families represent Bollywood's traditional film families that have ruled the award ceremonies for years.

From Amitabh to Abhishek, Yash Johar to Karan Johar and Rishi to Ranbir, the stars may have changed, the filmmakers may have changed but the awards keep coming.

Critics of the system say, if you're part of the family, the trophy's yours. If not better luck next time.

According to Madhur Bhandarkar: ''I have got national Award for Chandi Bar and Page Three. But I was a little disappointed in the popular awards here. After getting a national award, Page 3 was sidelined when it came to the popular awards. I didn't know why.''

As Madhur Bhandarkar puts it, the lines are clearly drawn - between who's in which camp and who's on who's side.

So if you're a Shah Rukh Khan, you host Filmfare but don't attend IIFA. And if you're a Bachchan that's the one award you don't miss.

All your friends and those you work with walk the red carpet with you, even hand out and receive awards. And sometimes even if you've got a great film lineage, you may at best get the critics award.

''The cliquism and the incestuousness stops talent. It's again quite the Arjun-Eklavya story, thousands of years after the Mahabharata. Only Arjun can'', says Sudhir Mishra.

According to film producer, Vipul Shah, ''Why is not a film actor or film producer allowed to promote his own family? Because that happens in every business. So why should an actor or director be restricted or be criticised for doing so. Because when a businessman hands over his multicrore empire to a son over a much more learned CEO, nobody makes an issue out of that.''

But of course there are exceptions to the rule. Powerful performers like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan, who came from the outside and built their own families - giving hope to the majority of this industry that has no family backing them.

''See people tell me that you are from Shah Rukh Khan camp, you are from this camp...we all belong to one camp. That is cinema. I am groomed in Mahesh Bhatt's so-called camp. Then I joined Shah Rukh Khan. And I have worked with Shah Rukh Khan for almost 12 years. He is like my local guardian. During these last 12 years I never felt I belong to Shah Rukh Khan's camp. I am friendly with everybody'', says Vivek Sharma, director of Bhoothnath.

Bollywood Gossip - Amitabh & Rekha together?
Sunday, February 24, 2008
Bollywood Gossip - Even we were equally surprised as you are on reading this title. Well that was the news, from a section of media reporting about reel life hit jodi Amitabh & Rekha's comeback in a film titled ALADDIN, to be directed by JHANKAAR BEATS fame director Sujoy Ghosh. The yesteryear-superhit jodi will appear onscreen after almost a gap of more than two decades (around 26 years). But sadly the news will settle only as headlines and will not turn out to be a reality as the director, Sujoy, denied about they being together in ALADDIN, when we contacted. Further he also confirmed that it's only Big B who is signed for the film, playing the character of 'Gini' and not Rekha. Well all those brokenhearted fans can at least enjoy the news, if not the movie.

Bollywood News - Raj rage on Bachchan
Sunday, February 3, 2008
Mumbai, Feb. 2: Amitabh Bachchan might be freezing in Shimla, but the heat is on the actor in Mumbai.

Bachchan has been caught in a political crossfire with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray accusing the star of taking more interest in home state Uttar Pradesh than Maharashtra, and the Samajwadi Party’s Amar Singh responding in kind.

“The whole country loves superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Even I admire him as an artiste. But when he got an opportunity to contest elections for the first time, he chose Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh over Mumbai. When it came to promoting a state as its brand ambassador, he chose Uttar Pradesh. When it came to acting in non-Hindi cinema, he chose Bhojpuri films,” Raj asked at a party meeting last evening.

The Shiv Sena rebel, who has been toeing his parent party’s Maharashtra-is-for-Maharashtrians line, added: “If such a big star is so fond of his home state, why can’t Raj Thackeray love his Maharashtra?”

Hours later, Amar dismissed the tirade as a publicity gimmick.

“He is taking the name of a big person for stunt. Neither is he a national leader, nor does he hold any constitutional post. By taking the name of Bachchan, he is popularising himself,” the Samajwadi leader, who calls the star his elder brother, told reporters.

A handful of Navnirman supporters stormed the news meet and began chanting slogans. As they were forced out, Amar brushed aside the interruption and continued with his spirited defence of north Indians in Mumbai.

“If they stop working, taxis in this city will stop. If they stop working, milk won’t be distributed and people will not find vegetables. They don’t need Raj Thackeray’s permission to come to Mumbai. The Constitution gives the right to citizens to earn a living anywhere in the country.”

Amar urged the state government to take cognisance of Raj’s comments.

State Congress chief Gurudas Kamat condemned Raj’s “disparaging” remarks. “We have urged chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and deputy chief minister R.R. Patil to take the strictest possible action against Thackeray,” he said.

Raj’s growing intolerance towards north Indians echoes the sentiments of uncle Bal Thackeray, from whose party he had split following differences with cousin Uddhav.

Raj ad earlier this week raised objections to Chhat puja celebrations in the city. It evoked sharp protests from north Indian leaders, including Lalu Prasad. Ram Vilas Paswan today demanded Raj’s arrest.

The nephew, however, found support in his estranged uncle’s party. Sena MP Sanjay Raut told news channels in Pune that his party agreed with Raj that as a Mumbaikar, Bachchan’s loyalties should lie with Maharashtra.

The Sena stand might surprise Bachchan, a close friend of the party boss. The actor had on January 19 launched a music album based on the poems of Thackeray’s grandson Aditya.

There was no reaction from Bachchan, who is shooting in snow-laden Shimla.

Health Minister asks SRK, AB to stop smoking
Monday, January 28, 2008
Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has appealed to Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan to stop smoking in movies as millions of youngsters emulate them and imbibe the bad habit.

"I have already made appeals to Shah Rukh Khan," Ramadoss said in Karan Thapar's "Devil's Advocate" programme being aired on a news channel.

"But I would be happy to do it again and say, 'Please don't smoke in your movies, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan'. I would like to make an appeal to Mr. Shah Rukh Khan and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and all the other personalities.

"Fourteen-year-olds are taking to tobacco. India should be very, very concerned about the alarming rise of incidence of tobacco (use) amongst young people," the minister emphasised.

Criticising movies with smoking scenes, the minister said: "The movies are most responsible (for encouraging smoking). When I said movies should not have smoking scenes, we have statistics which show that 52 percent of children have their first puff of a cigarette because of movie celebrities."

When asked about Shah Rukh smoking during a recent cricket match, Ramadoss said the actor should not have done it.

"Absolutely not. What was the necessity? See these are celebrities and millions of youngsters look up to these celebrities...I again say to celebrities, in whichever field they are, whether it's movies or sports, not to do these things in public."

Responding to a question if Shah Rukh and Amitabh could stop smoking like Tamil superstar Rajnikant, the minister said: "Easily, they could do it. Without a doubt."

"I won't leave parents for Ash" says Abhishek
Friday, January 18, 2008
Denying widespread reports on Monday that Abhishek had bought a house where he he intended to move with his wife Aishwarya, Abhishek says, "It is not true at all."

Refuting reports that Abhishek Bachchan has bought a flat in Vashu Bhangani's building pat opposite the Bachchans' residence Jalsa, the producer-turned-builder turns emotional.

"I've never come across a more devoted son than Abhishek. Not even my own son Jackie. It really hurts me to see my name dragged in as a home-breaker. I shudder to think how I'd react if my son got married and decided to move out.

Abhishek would never do that. As for buying an apartment in my building….arrey, he doesn't have to BUY one. All he has to say is send him the keys, and it's his. That's the kind of rapport we share."

Getting more emotional Vashu continues, "When I bought land opposite Amitji's bungalow it was a dream come true. That's why I named the building Pinnacle Dreams. I wanted people who wanted to share my dream of living close to Jalsa to buy apartments in my building."

Omce news was out that apartments were available opposite the Bachchans' residence, Vashu had a tough time keeping the crowds of buyers away. "All the apartments in Pinnacle Dreams were sold out eight months ago.

Abhishek Bachchan [ Photo Gallery ]

There's no vacant apartment except one which I've kept for myself, and that I'd happily give to Abhishek anytime. But he hasn't asked me for it! In fact many interested persons including Pritish Nandy have called to inquire about place in Pinnacle Dreams. Now I'm building a high-rise apartment in front of the J W. Marriott."

Vashu intends to return to film production this year, for his son Jackie's sake.

"My son Jackie will be launched by Vivek Sharma (who's currently helming Bhootnath with the Big B for producer Ravi Chopra) in a film called Kal Kissne Dekha. The film starts shooting in June."

Bhagnani Jr's leading lady is in the process of being finalized. One of the strong contenders is Vedika who's done some South Indian films.

Says the proud father, "I've been preparing the boy for six years now. He has been trained in every thing possible. But of course you can't fool the audience. If Jackie isn't good he'll be rejected."

Bollywood News : Big B signs up for toon movie
Wednesday, January 2, 2008
We have seen him in various avatars. He has been the Shahenshah, Sexy Sam, Anthony etc. But now superstar Amitabh Bachchan has gone a step further in his bid to reinvent himself. This time he will be seen on screen as a cartoon character.

It is believed that the Big B has signed a deal with an animation company for a cartoon movie. The movie is expected to hit the screen in the next one year. It will be a full-length feature film with a cartoon character based on the Big B. The superstar has been giving a lot of ideas and the script is taking shape. But the production house is yet to find a director for the venture. The agreement has been signed with the Thiruvananthapuram Toonz Academy, which co-produced the recent Hanuman Returns. Bachchan is said to be very gung-ho about the production and was quite involved in the look of the character in film which will be based on him. Well, after Priyanka Chopra designed a toon character for Virgin Comics and Shah Rukh Khan lent his voice for the Hindi version of The Unbreakables, the race to leave an animated footprint is on in full earnest.

Teji Bachchan passes away
Friday, December 21, 2007
Mother of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Teji, on Friday died in a hospital in suburban Mumbai after prolonged illness. She was 93.
Wife of Hindi literary great Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Teji was in the Lilavati Hospital for almost the whole of this year and was shifted to the ICU last month after her condition became worse. Details of the cause of her demise were not immediately available.

Earlier, members of the Bachchan family, including sons Amitabh and Ajitabh, grandson Abhishek and his wife Aishwarya, arrived at the hospital after learning that her condition deteriorated.

Teji's body was later taken to `Prateeksha', the Bachchans' residence in the suburbs of Mumbai.
Among those, who went with the body, were actor Amitabh, brother Ajitabh, Abhishek, his wife Aishwarya and industrialist Anil Ambani.

Others present at the hospital included family friends Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh and Anil Ambani, actors Danny Denzongpa, Sonali Bendre and industrialist Subroto Roy Sahara.

Her last rites will be performed on Thursday.

The second wife of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Teji was an amatuer actor as well as a singer. Harivansh Rai, himself a renowned Hindi poet, died in 2003 at the age of 96.

Born as Teji Suri to Punjabi parents, she married Bachchan in 1941 after the death of his first wife. She was also close to the Nehru-Gandhi family while the Bachchan family was living in Delhi in the late 1950s.

Teji's illness had resulted in the Bachchan family curtailing celebrations at their Juhu residence for the past few years on occasions like Holi and Diwali.

Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai had visited her in the hospital prior to their wedding earlier this year to seek her blessings. All major family events were usually conducted after seeking her blessings.

Amitabh, Shah Rukh to clash as Don
Wednesday, December 19, 2007
It looks like the senior and junior Don, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, will battle it out at the box office.

While Farhan Akhtar prepares to plunge into a sequel to his 2006 hit Don - The Chase Begins Again, with Shah Rukh in the lead, the family of Nariman Irani, who made the original Don in 1978 with Amitabh Bachchan, is all set to do their own take on the film with the Big B again.

Speaking on the subject for the first time, the Big B told IANS: "Yes, they (Nariman Irani's family) met me some time back. I'm yet to hear the script."

However, Farhan seems to be completely in the dark regarding this parallel project.

"I've no idea of this. We've very close relations with the Irani family. We've been very clear with each other. When they gave us the rights for remaking Don they gave us the right to exploit the movie for the next three-four years. We had even told them we might be doing a sequel. And they were really cool about it.

"They didn't seem interested in going back and doing anything Don related. From the outset they've been straight with us. I don't think they'd just go around announcing another movie."

But with the Iranis having approached Amitabh, a clash of creative interest between the two Dons featuring the Big B and Shah Rukh seems inevitable.
