What are Bollywood stars planning for New Year?
As New Year's Eve rolls in, the Bollywood brigade is planning to whoop it up in different ways.

While Priyanka Chopra, Suniel Shetty and Sonam Kapoor plan to make it a family affair, Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora will entertain their fans with performances and others like Tusshar Kapoor are going to welcome the New Year with work.

Priyanka Chopra: I'm shooting till the Dec 30. Then I have one day to spend with my family. After the New Year, I am off to Bangkok to shoot a commercial for a beauty soap. My wish? That my father remains well and my films do well!

Suniel Shetty: I'm off to spend the year-end with my family in our Khandala home, and that includes my parents, of course. I'd want my family to be happy and complete in 2008. On the professional front, I want my production company Popcorn Entertainment to march ahead.

Bipasha Basu: I'm working on New Year's Eve. I'll be performing at the Marriott. Then I'm heading to Kenya for a week's holiday. I hope in 2008 I've loads of fun and I do great work. I'd like more travel for myself and less violence for the world.

Tusshar Kapoor: I can't travel out of Mumbai for the New Year because I'm shooting. So it'd be just close friends home on the Dec 31. My only wish for 2008 is to see my films get a smooth release.

Sonam Kapoor: I'm actually working this New Year in Jaipur. But my parents, sister and my best friend are coming to visit me.

Arshad Warsi: I'm off to the mountains in Uttaranchal with my family. I wish the world would take global warming seriously in 2008.

R. Madhavan: I'm off on a cruise with my wife and son in Singapore. My wish? I want to spend lots and lots of time with my family in Chennai in 2008. In 2007, I was home for all of 28 days.

Raveena Tandon: I'll be with my husband, my two children and friends at a friend's house in Alibaug. I want to get back to some work in 2008.

Esha Deol: On the 31st I'm with my old school friends. In 2008, I want a role that will challenge me as an actress. Waiting with fingers crossed. I've kept my dates free. For the rest of world, I pray for peace.

Urmila Matondkar: I'll be working during New Year's Eve. As for my wish list for 2008, do you have the time?

Shabana Azmi: I've no plans for the New Year. I guess I'll go with the flow in the coming year.

Mona Singh: This may sound boring, but I'll visit gurdwaras for the New Year's Eve to thank god for all he has given me. Then I'll spend the day with the family. I'll party at night with friends. In 2008, I hope I get that one big role in Bollywood.

Perizaad Zorabian: This New Year is special because it's my first as mummy to baby Zaha. Playing mummy, daddy and baby is like living in a fairytale. In 2008, I want to balance out my family life with my career.

Rahul Khanna: I'm spending the New Year with friends in the US and looking forward to a year of interesting and fun-filled roles.

Arbaaz Khan: This year for the New Year's I'll be at our family farmhouse in Panvel with my parents and brothers. Earlier, during the year-end we'd head to Goa or Dubai. In 2008 I want to quit smoking. My son is growing up and I don't want him to feel it's okay to smoke because daddy's doing it.

Malaika Arora: I'll be in Delhi performing for Country Club. In 2008 I want my new TV show and my feature film 'EMI' to do well

Koena Mitra: I'll be dancing at the Sahara Star Hotel. Afterwards I'll party. I'm glad I'll be working and I'll bring in the New Year with work. In 2008, I want better work and more love from everyone. At the end of the day all we want is happiness.

Dino Morea: I'm spending the New Year with my family and closed friends. My parents are down from Bangalore. In 2008, all I want is to work every day.

Celina Jaitley: My brother got engaged Dec 27. So we'll have a family dinner on New Year welcoming his fiancee to the family. That apart I want my career to finally take off in 2008. I've worked hard. I want my dues.

Amrita Rao: Since January 2007 I've been living out of suitcases. I've just returned from a month's schedule in Jaisalmer. So now I'm looking forward to spending time in Mumbai. My cousins have come down from America and we'll be partying together.

Irrfan Khan: My tall and long plan is to explore the interiors of Maharashtra. It's very important to be in touch with one's roots. Anyone who wants to accompany me is welcome to do so.

Rahul Bose: It's a sombre New Year for my sister and me. We lost our father recently. We're in our ancestral home in Kasauli going through his things, putting finishing touches to his life. But I don't grieve for my father. I celebrate his passing forth. Happy New Year!

Rakhi dropped from Ekta's awards function
After the brouhaha Rakhi Sawant created about the alleged rigging of results on STAR Plus' dance show Nach Baliye 3 and her questioning the 'role' of Ekta Kapoor and Balaji Telefilms in the final result, Balaji has decided to drop Rakhi from their first awards function on Jan 25 that is likely to be held at Dubai.

When asked, Ekta told IANS: 'I wouldn't really know the details of the show since they are being handled by Bunty Wallia and the Moranis. But yes, if my company has taken a policy decision, I am with them.'

'Rakhi was being offered a place in our first awards function. No, she wasn't going to dance but she was going to host one segment of the show. But after she has been making wild and totally unfounded allegations against Ekta, accusing her of favouring Aamir and Sanjida, Balaji has decided to drop Rakhi from their awards function,' said a Balaji source.

Ekta's awards function is likely to be held in Dubai. According to sources, Shah Rukh Khan has finally said yes to a performance at what promises to be one of the biggest live events.

Shah Rukh will be accompanied by none other than the Balaji breakaway bahu Smriti Irani.

'The idea is to set aside all rancour, to disprove stories about the ill-will generated by our actors who move out of Balaji. So it isn't just Smriti who's being invited to perform, we're also asking Iqbal Khan and Rajiv Khandelwal to join us on Jan 25,' said the source.

While the Moranis will be organising Shah Rukh's performance, the rest of the event will be handled by Bunty Walia's company.

Simi Garewal remembers Benazir
Saturday, December 29, 2007
Bollywood actress and television host Simi Garewal says she is still in shock two days after former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi.

"I'm shattered. I cannot accept her going away. As I talk to you, I haven't come to terms with her not being alive. She was strong and vivacious... That something so ghastly could happen...," she said.

Expressing her agony, Garewal said: "It's just so horrible. To say anything about what has happened would be belittling the enormity of the tragedy. Just five days ago, I found the most affectionate email messages from her. After the tragedy on Thursday night, crew of Rendezvous, the celebrity interview show that I host, messaged me to say they remembered how I interviewed her in Dubai."

"The Benazir I knew was not just a superb states-woman and a politician, she was also a personal friend. The minute we met for Rendezvous, we bonded as though we had known each other all our lives. We spoke about girlie things over so many sessions that began with her appearance on 'Rendezvous'," the actress recalled.

Garewal is full of personal anecdotes. Benazir apparently walked into the room where the Rendezvous crew was setting up equipment at her home in Dubai.

"She came in without a dot of make-up, her hair tied in a knot. She came in, saw how we had moved everything in her home."

Benazir exclaimed: "Oh my God! What have you done to my room!" Garewal recalls that her crew was instantly smitten by the "slain" politician's warmth and spontaneity. "They found her so beautiful. Then she came down for the interview. We just bonded and it lasted far beyond the Rendezvous. I felt she was a friend I knew from school."

The actress has vivid memories of the tea Benazir served after the interview.

"She not only cut the cake and poured the tea herself, she personally served it to every member of my team. That was Benazir!

I did not feel that I was sitting with a former and future prime minister. I felt I was bonding with a female friend. Yes, I felt the same with Jayalalitha. But not to this extent. Benazir and I giggled and giggled."

Benazir told mutual Pakistani friends later how much she enjoyed meeting Simi Garewal.

"After the Rendezvous interview, she said we must meet again in London. We used to spend a lot of time in London over dinners

and lunches. Benazir, her sister Sanam, my sister Amrita and I had a sisters' lunch in London. I don't know whether Benazir and her sister were as close as I am with my sister, but Benazir kept us entertained throughout that afternoon," the actress recalled.

"She had seen my documentary on Rajiv Gandhi. She was very curious about him. She wanted to know details about him. And we talked about make-up. Benazir thought her make-up was terrible and she wanted tips from me...We spoke about everything from politics to astrology and the media. We spoke so much so fast! We met many times. She could never stop laughing about how I tried to make her pose for the opening titles of the Rendezvous," the television host said.

The actress recalled that Benazir kept saying: "What on earth were you making me do?' She'd burst into uncontrollable peals of laughter. That infectious laughter still rings in my ears. I still have her lovely letter saying how much she loved the show. We discussed her politics constantly. I remember once she asked me if it would be a good idea to do another show on television. I advised her against it. And she listened to me.

Narrating another anecdote, she said a friend in India had asked Benazir to attend an event. She wrote a lovely letter begging off.

"Quite recently, Benazir was in Delhi I was supposed to meet her but couldn't. I sent flowers to her hotel, which she did not get. Ah, those memories! My heart reaches out to her children, specially the younger daughter who's 14 and needs her mother.

What an adorable girl. I remember Benazir being certain she would be back as the prime minister. How was she to know death would be a much larger certainty?"

Bollywood explores bolder themes
Remember Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai where the veteran actress Suhasini Mulay played a distressed mother who watches in dismay as her son, played by Akshaye Khanna, falls for an older woman?

In Naseeruddin Shah's Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, Suhasini played a woman who becomes the object of adoration of a much younger man, played by Irrfan Khan.

There have been films like Dil Chahta Hai, Anmol and Being Cyrus - all featuring Dimple Kapadia - where a 40-plus woman has fallen for a much younger man.

Producer Sudhish Rambhotla of Hyderabad's ColorChips production house is currently planning a film with Sammir Dattani that is based on The Summer Of 42. Rambhotla wants Rekha, Shabana or Dimple to play the romantic lead opposite the young actor.

"Why not?" said Irrfan. "Hindi cinema is maturing and it's wonderful to be part of a film like Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. I played opposite Suhasini. I'm a guy who looked for a mother figure in love. It was definitely a departure from the way

man-woman relationships are depicted in films these days."

Irrfan played a working class man in his 40s totally besotted by an older woman.

"My character adored the woman to the point of worship. She's very classy and I'm nothing but a diversion for her. She'd happily make love to another man if she found someone more interesting," said Irrfan.

"Suhasini and I shared a very important lovemaking scene, a part of which was edited in the final cut. But the scene combined food and sex. We went into this whole sensuous culinary mood...

"It was bizarre and fascinating. I had never done anything like this," confessed Irrfan who started his career making violent love to Dimple Kapadia in Govind Nihalani's Drishti.

Nepal moves to counter Bollywood piracy
When Shah Rukh Khan's new blockbuster Om Shanti Om was released in India and Nepal, it took less than a week for pirated audio and video cassettes to hit the streets.

The same thing happened with another much-anticipated Bollywood release, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya.

It was not a new phenomenon, nor limited to these two films.

A flourishing racket in pirated Bollywood films has been spanning India, Nepal, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia, causing both the Hindi film industry and Nepalese cinemas to lose billions of rupees each year.

After mounting complaints by Nepalese cinema owners, who screen Hindi films, Nepal's film authorities have now woken up to the perils of the underground business.

Nepal Film Development Board recently formed a five-member committee headed by debutant film director and board member Shivaji Lamichhane to study the issue and other problems hindering the growth of Kollywood - Nepal's film industry - and come up with solutions.

"The piracy of Bollywood films is not just India's problem, it affects Nepal's theatres as well," said Lamichhane.

"People have stopped going to cinemas because they can watch a newly released film at home by paying much less than the ticket prices."

The committee has tabled a report to the Board, asking it to seek laws with teeth to deter piracy.

It has suggested that all video parlours should be registered or face a shutdown.

There should be periodic raids by law enforcement agencies and anyone found dealing in pirated CDs and VCDs could be slapped with a fine of around $3,150 (Nepalese Rupees 200,000) and a jail term of three to five years.

It has also suggested that genuine VCDs and CDs carry a hologram to distinguish them from the fakes that can be bought for less than NRS 50 openly on Kathmandu's streets.

The committee is also asking for an interaction with Bollywood authorities so that they can fight the menace together and more effectively. However, it will take a long time for the measures to be implemented.

Grappling with political instability and growing lawlessness, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's government is currently struggling to hold a critical election in Nepal.

With the constituent assembly election scheduled for mid-April, parliament and security agencies will remain preoccupied with poll preparations and the legislation of new laws is certain to take a long time.

Preity off to Phuket for New Year
She is taking a well-earned vacation. After shooting as the derelict NRI wife in Deepa Mehra's Heaven On Earth, Preity Zinta is off to Phuket, Thailand with her friends to bring in the New Year.

Last year at this time Preity had injured herself during a vacation.

"The year has been a tough one for me," groaned Preity. "Not only did I suffer a serious injury, it has also been a year of tough challenges for me as an actor."

"In 2007, I went into another kind of cinema altogether. From doing Yash Raj Films to playing a woman who finds herself at the receiving end of life in Heaven On Earth has been quite a creative and cultural shock for me," said Preity.

The actress is, however, quick to point out the film isn't only about a battered wife.

"It's about all the people who leave India and hope to find paradise abroad, only to be stuck on wretched 16-hour jobs with no happiness or sunshine. I never knew how such marginalized women existed until I played one," she said.

"Deepa Mehta and Heaven On Earth have proved eye openers for me. But the film was tough on me emotionally. In the month that I was in Toronto, I went out just twice and that too to maintain my sanity. I really need a break now," added the actress who had only one commercial release this year.

She featured in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom with Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol, but it bombed. Preity will return from her vacation in the second week of January with a clear date diary.

Taare Zameen Par goes tax free
Taare Zameen Par is in news not only because it is the first film Aamir Khan has officially directed, but also because it is the only movie that has been declared tax-free just five days after its release.

Despite the film having a bold and unconventional theme like Dyslexia, a learning disorder from which several children suffer, Taare Zameen Par has turned out to be a box office hit.

Making films with strong social or national messages tax-free is a popular trend. Recently, Chak De India was also made tax-free thanks to its message of unity in diversity.

Other films that were declared tax free in the past include Lage Raho Munnabhai, Guru, Pooja Bhatt's Dhokha, Rang De Basanti, Lakshya, Koi Mil Gaya and the list goes on.

In fact, Anurag Kashyap's Hanuman Returns has been declared tax-free even before its release.

Eros's First Indi-Pop Album release by Aadesh Srivastava
Eros Music, a division of Eros International, the London AIM listed leading integrated company within the Indian media & entertainment sector released its first non-film album, music composer-singer Aadesh Srivastava’s Beyond Boundaries…Apna Bana Le. Eros marks its foray into the world of pop with Aadesh’s second non-film album after a gap of ten years.

With several Bollywood hits to his credit, the prolific music composer takes this tradition of touching people’s heart with his music a little further with his solo album. Aptly titled, ‘Beyond Boundaries… Apna Bana Le…’ for the maker feels music does transcend borders and nationalities. What makes the album unique is the versatile musician has not only composed the songs in the album but has also sung them all by himself with a variation in his voice in each song. India’s leading lyricist, Sameer, has written the lyrics of the eclectic mix of tracks with internationally acclaimed Remo lending able support with his trademark music – a fusion of different cultures and styles. The hugely acclaimed DJ Suketu has arranged the music for Beyond Boundaries.

With Aadesh’s Beyond Boundaries, Eros Music adds to its repertoire in the endeavor to present hit music after its previous successes of Omkara, Cheeni Kum, Namastey London etc. Eros established its own music label with Vishal Bharadwaj’s Omkara, a powerful Indian adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello and also its India distribution arm to complement its extensive international distribution network, stamping its position as a global content producer-owner-distributor.

The melodies of ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ are carefree and joyful and ranges from the very energetic Punjabi number, ‘Chak De Chak De…’ to a raag-based Sufiyana song, ‘Ishq Sufiyana Ishq Sufiyana…’ to the hip-hop, ‘One For The Road…’ amongst others, which is sure to keep the audience grooving and asking for more. . And not to miss, the patriotic number, ‘Namaste Salaam Hindustani Mera Naam’. The ‘Ghagro Ghumme Se Ghumme Se Chhori Ko’, is a vibrant number that truly brings with it the flavour of Rajasthan. It is highly foot tapping and would be lapped by people from all over. The music master weaves his magic all over with a high-pitched powerful song in, ‘Ali Dum Ali Dum...’ Both raga based melodies and sprinted youthful and peppy numbers come easy to this composer, which is well reflected in this album.

And what else makes this album different from the others? Well… the versatile musician has not only composed the songs in the album but has also sung them all by himself. So, what’s new, you may ask? Well… the catch is -- Aadesh has sung every song in, ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ with a variation in his voice. Yes, every number has been sung in a different voice. Be it the high-pitched ‘Om Shanti Om…’ or the soulful number, ‘Oindhi Jad Oindhi Nayyo Jondi…’ or the classical ‘Kunj Gali Mein Bheti Radha…’ And when Aadesh is in charge of the compositions, one does expect some trademark melodies. Last, but not the least Aadesh leads to the dance floor with his hip hop number ‘Do You Know That’ sung along with his two young sons aged nine and eleven.

Once a while, comes an album, which breaks all barriers and proves to be a turning point in Indian music. Aadesh’s ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ is sure to tread the path of glory. So for all those people out there who thought Aadesh could do wonders only at making music check his vocal chords too.

Add ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ to your music collection. The album promises a fun-filled ride!

Produced by Jagran Events & Music, Veecon Music and Film Production Pvt. Ltd., ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ has chartbusting music, sure to melt the hearts when the audio flirts with the frequencies. This is the reason why ‘Beyond Boundaries…’ is a reason to celebrate since as many as nine tracks promise to make it the album one joyful delight.

The people behind this effort are ace lyricist Sameer, pop singer Remo Fernandes and DJ Suketu. While Remo is directing the videos Suketu is the music arranger.

Rakhi Sawant sues Star TV, alleges fraud in Nach Baliye
Mumbai: Mumbai Police's Crime Branch will investigate actress Rakhi Sawant’s complaint against TV channel Star TV's reality dance show, Nach Baliye.

Dilip Patil, police officer in charge of Oshiwara police station, said that Rakhi and her choreographer Abhishekh Awasthi submitted a joint written complaint, alleging malpractices by the channel.

"We have accepted the complaint but not yet registered a case," Patil told. A police team will go into all aspects of the matter before deciding whether it merits further proceedings, including a formal police case, he emphasized.

Patil also made it clear this was a "non-priority" matter and would be probed in the routine course. "There are far bigger issues of importance than this, so we shall deploy our men as per the merits of the case," he said.

Last Saturday, TV actress Sanjeeda Shaikh and her choreographer Aamir Ali were declared winners of the third Nach Baliye reality dance show.

Rakhi-Abhishek emerged the runners-up in the show, which attracted 11 celebrity couples this year for the competition which went on for four months.

Soon after film actor Salman Khan announced the winners, Rakhi started crying and walked off the stage with Abhishek.

Addressing mediapersons Tuesday, Rakhi and Abhishek levelled several accusations against the channel, including tampering with SMS votes, indulging in software manipulation, etc.

"We knew hours before the results that we had lost," claimed Rakhi and Abhishek.

The two alleged that if the police do not investigate this 'cyber crime', such frauds will never stop. Rakhi also pleaded with the Mumbai police to act as 'Santa' and initiate action against the channel and the show organisers.

Sanjeeda is the vamp sister in the popular Star Plus serial, "Kayamath". After bagging the "Nach Baliye" crown, which included a Rs.2.50 million cash award plus other benefits, she has been catapulted into the top league of TV stars.
