Mira Nair to push Tabu's name for Oscars?
Tuesday, September 25, 2007
Indo Asian News Service

New York-based Indian filmmaker Mira Nair likely to push Tabu's name for an Oscar nomination this year. The talented actress played the central role in her film The Namesake.

'She is definitely going to project Tabu as a potential best actress at the Oscars. Though Irrfan Khan is as good, if not better, the focus of Nair's Oscar campaign for her masterly study of the Indian diaspora is likely to be predominantly Tabu,' said a source close to the project.

'Irrfan is excellent. But he lacks what the Americans are looking for in their Oscars recipe. Tabu is exotic, glamorous and mysterious. This is her first real exposure to the Western audience. And they're lapping up her Bengali act, thick accent and all. On top of that she's also wowing the westerners with her performance in Cheeni Kum,' added the source.

Will Tabu be the first Indian actor to win an Oscar?

'Why not?' says Mira's creative compatriot Deepa Mehta. 'She's amazingly good, on a par with any of her Western counterparts,' said Mehta who six years ago offered Tabu the lead in 'Water'. The deal fell apart.

A lot of global cineastes are positive about Tabu's chances. However, Tabu herself remains supremely indifferent to recognition at home or abroad.

Malaika Arora Khan is undoubtedly our industry’s hottest mom who not only oozes style and oomph, but she does it with élan and pride. The lady has many firsts to her credit—the first to perform an item number on a moving train, the first non–model to VJ for a popular music channel and the first model whose stilettos became as big a hit as she was. Now, the latest addition to this list of firsts is being the first mother to appear on the Maxim cover of this month’s edition. Titled ‘Black Velvet’ the photographs show Malaika in black lingerie, striking provocative poses on a couch. Dia Mirza upset upon Rohit Roy
Television Actor turned Bollywood Star Rohit Roy is a part of a huge starcast of Sanjay Gupta's Alibaug starring Dia Mirza. The actor is in news recently for showing his indescent advances towards Dia Mirza.

The duo were in Goa and after one shooting, Dia was relaxing in a swimming pool at the hotel where she was staying along with the rest of the cast when Rohit joined her in the swimming pool.

As she was getting out of the pool, it so happened that Rohit Roy swam up to her from behind and pinched her bottom. Dia felt very much insulted and left the pool in tears.

To make matters worse, the next day, Rohit behaved as if nothing has occured. When Dia refused to speak to Rohit Roy, and demanded that he should apologize for his indecent behaviour, Rohit denied about any such incident and claimed that he saw nothing in Dia that would prompt him to make advances.

Dia was very much upset with this matter but later the rest of the cast intervened and made Rohit apologise.

Is Sanjay Bhansali making Hamari Jaan Ho Tum?
By Subhash K. Jha

If reports from an imaginative section of the media are to be believed, Sanjay Bhansali has already firmed in on his next project. And it's called; hold your breath, Hamari Jaan Ho Tum.

Before we moved ahead with this mushy mythical yarn, let's rewind quickly to the exquisite soundtrack of Saawariya where one of the most melodious tracks has the cutest love lyrics that go, ‘Thode badmaash ho tum thode nadaan ho tum / haan magar yeh sach hai hamari jaan ho tum’.

Indeed Hamari Jaan Ho Tum was an idea that the moviemaking magician was toying with after the success of Black. It was a story about young love in which Sanjay wanted to cast Udit Narayan's son and Mahesh Bhatt-Soni Razdan's daughter.

So is that going to be his next project? Laughs the beleaguered director, "Right now I’m too consumed by the release of Saawariya to even think about what I'll do next. My music composer Monty Sharma and I are busy putting together the background score. Do you know, Monty is the first composer I've worked with who writes music? He knows the musical notations and he puts every note of a tune down on paper before recording them. Such precision in musicianship I’ve never encountered before. I can't think beyond Monty and his music right now."

As for Hamari Jaan Ho Tum, Sanjay has no plans of making that in the immediate future.

Tearful Meghalaya still calls Amit Indian Idol
Monday, September 24, 2007
Shillong, September 24: The hills of Meghalaya were on song until Sunday midnight, but it all went out of tune when local singing sensation Amit Paul was edged out by Darjeeling cop Prashant Tamang in the hugely popular television contest Indian Idol.

Thousands of people had been singing and dancing to the accompaniment of drums and guitars in the streets of Shillong and most parts of Meghalaya since dusk Sunday, eagerly waiting for Amit to win the Indian Idol title.

But when Bollywood macho star John Abraham raised the hand of Prashant declaring him the Indian Idol - based on 70 million votes received on SMS or over the phone lines - the music was abruptly stilled.

The Meghalaya fans rallied fast, however.

'We are really taken aback by the result, but for us Amit is the winner, having won the hearts of millions of fans and more importantly, uniting the ethnically polarized northeast through music,' John F. Kharshiing, spokesperson of the Federation of Khasi States, the apex body campaigning for legal status for the durbars in Meghalaya, told.

It was pure hysteria in the whole of Meghalaya in the run-up to the grand finale Sunday night telecast on Sony TV with Amit and Prashant vying for the coveted crown.

'Let's accept the reality, don't cry for me. I am soon coming back to Shillong. I really thank and love you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting me throughout my musical journey on Indian Idol,' Amit told by telephone from New Delhi, the venue of the finals.

But people back home were in tears - hundreds of people, both young and old who remained awake to celebrate a possible victory broke down, some of them even wailing, unable to accept the verdict.

'For us Amit is the new role model, some sort of a youth icon for generation next to emulate that music is one medium that unites the hearts cutting across cultural and ethnic barriers,' Meghalaya Education Minister R.G. Lyngdoh said.

Amit, 24, is a Bengali-speaking youth born and brought up in Shillong - a city that was witness to a string of bloody ethnic riots in the mid-80s between tribals and non-tribals. The growing schism in the northeast between the indigenous population and 'outsiders', a term broadly used for people speaking other Indian languages, has become a matter of concern.

In this context, the euphoria and the support from people across the northeast for Amit is heartening.

'We have conferred him the honorary title of Meghalaya's Brand Ambassador to foster peace, communal harmony, and excellence,' Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang said.

Lapang personally spearheaded the campaign to drum up support for Amit.

From government offices to the tribal king's durbars, the chief minister's secretariat to the Raj Bhawan, and schools and colleges - the only topic of discussion in the past few weeks in the northeastern state of Meghalaya was the Indian Idol contest.

'The Amit phenomenon could very well unite the northeast, especially in states like Nagaland and Manipur where the ethnic divide is so huge. We want more such talents from the region to come up so that we can stand united without any bloodshed,' said Kishore Singh, a young college student in Manipur's capital Imphal.

'The topic of discussion for the next few days would surely be Amit. Maybe Prashant got lot of votes from Nepal because he is a Nepali boy. Maybe Nepal came in the way of Amit's victory,' said a dejected Paul Marbaniang, a college student.

"It's far tougher doing an Ad" says Abhishek
Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, who is the new brand ambassador of Flying Machine jeans and all set to shoot for its ad films, says it is anything but easy to work in ad films.'I think it's far tougher doing an ad. Within two minutes one has to say what one gets to say in nearly three hours in movies. So, yes, I enjoy doing ads,' he said.

'Flying Machine is a special challenge because here I'm going to be instrumental in taking the product ahead of where it is. Hopefully, far ahead,' Abhishek told IANS.

Abhishek, who unveiled a new collection of the brand, said that the brainstorming was now on for the first Flying Machine ad.

'I'm, of course, in the loop. I'm taken into confidence as to who would shoot the ad and other details. It's so gratifying to work with these young ad makers, many of whom finally come into making movies... Pradeep Sarkar, with whom I've done ads and now a film called Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and Balkrishnan being the latest examples of ad makers-turned-feature film makers. These guys are really talented.'

So does the brand intend to make Abhishek the global face of Flying Machine?

'They do. And I feel good about it. Because I'm furthering the cause of a product I truly believe in,' he said, adding that he won't endorse products he doesn't believe in.

The Next Super Star of Bollywood - Ranbir Kapoor
Sunday, September 23, 2007
Ranbir Kapoor , the son of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, is the latest Bollywood entrant from the famous Kapoor clan.

What better way to start one’s acting career than with a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie? Yes, Ranbir has got a dream start to his Bollywood career. He will make his debut in Bhansali’s project Saanvariya , which also introduces Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam Kapoor .

Even as Ranbir is still busy shooting for his first movie, talks have begun to cast him in more projects. His dad, Rishi Kapoor, is looking forward to revive RK Films banner with a movie starring Ranbir in the lead role.

Rishi has already made a request to Rajkumar Hirani ( Lage Raho Munnabhai director) to direct a film for RK Banner. While Hirani has declined to make the film, he has agreed to cast the 24-year-old Ranbir in his next movie which will not be a Munnabhai series.

The film, yet untitled, will be Hirani’s take on the present day education system. It will be about striving to be successful, and how the joy of learning is gone in modern education.

Hirani is presently working on the first draft of the film’s script with Abhijat Joshi. The project will go on the floors in the first quarter of 2007.

On a different front, talks are on to rope in Ranbir and Sonam for the lead roles in the sequel to the yesteryear’s hit ‘Mr. India’.

The sequel will be directed by Nikhil Advani, the director of Kal Ho Na Ho . The film might also mark the comeback of Sridevi and Anil Kapoor .

However, the cast is still to be finalized.

In the meantime, Ranbir continues to grab headlines, partly because of his good looks and partly because of the compliments that keep coming intermittently from Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
